Should we make a Trade?

Of course yall know how I am about trading away draft picks.  However we were able to get Olsen with a third round pick.  Are there any players out there that could be had on the cheap?  With Hardy being out and CJ's skills declining, I've been thinking perhaps the Jets would be interested in dealing Quinton Coples.  His rookie year, he was able to put up 5.5 sacks from the DE position.  In his sophomore year, they transitioned him to play OLB, and his stats aren't spectacular at all from there.  This guy is a 4-3 DE, and perhaps the Jets would be willing to let him go for a 3rd pick and a cornerback. (I elect Josh Norman, but it would be a hard sale indeed)

um

you're kidding, right?

Nope.  What's wrong with that trade?

One, Coples is garbage.

Two, lol @ trading a 3rd round pick for a dude who was a first round pick just a couple of years ago.

Three, no team on this planet other than us (for some ungodly reason) wants Josh Norman within 100 feet of their roster.

It's all about the system.  We were able to get Olsen, former 1st round pick, because the Bears didn't want to keep him due to the system.  It's the same here with Coples in my opinion.  He was great his rookie year playing DE, better than Hardy and CJ's rookie seasons.  He would fit right at home here in the Carolinas.  Also he would be insurance for Hardy leaving us at year's end. (Ealy is still developing.)

It's evident now that this defense depends on our front four guys.  It's actually amazing that we don't blitz more often considering McDermott was a student of Jim Johnson.  Who knows if Frank can pick up the slack left by Hardy.  I'm not totally confident there.

I would rather us give Seastrunk and Hill a shot before we deal for a RB or WR. Plus, it would be wise to wait for Alexander to return before we think about adding a DE. However, I'd overpay at this point to get a starting caliber LT or RT on this team.

    • More praise of Renfrow from Tim Weaver (formerly of USA Today's Panthers Wire, now SI.com), and also what I told some of you, my Huddle friends, from the start: keep it all in perspective, and don't conveniently---and perhaps unfairly, discount and label Renfrow as a JAG when it was a very debilitating illness affecting his play.    "It's understandable to be skeptical about Renfrow's abilities at this late point in his career. After all, he missed all of last season due to a bout of ulcerative colitis that also took a serious toll on his production in 2022 and 2023."   When Renfrow is healthy, he's an above average guy. Being 29 may hurt or help his chances depending upon perspective, but 29 for receivers generally means that there's still (sometimes plenty) gas in the tank. Renfrow also obviously has plenty of motivation and has come with his game face.   "Then agan, seeing is believing and by all accounts Renfrow has been very impressive since joining the Panthers a few months ago... Where Renfrow will fit in Carolina's new-look receiver corps remains to be seen, but at this rate it's going to be hard to exclude him from the initial 53-man roster." https://www.si.com/nfl/panthers/hunter-renfrow-sick-route-panthers-training-camp Read the room, ladies and gentlemen. And don't get it twisted; Renfrow isn't the most talented receiver on the team, but we have seen his ceiling, when healthy, in a Raiders offense that wasn't necessary replete with talent. Consider what he can do, especially in the slot, in a Panthers offense primed with young talent (no pun intended). From sick to "sick routes," eh?
    • That is literally what I am talking about. Those were 53 man cuts. Not at the beginning of camp.  I would say the odds of Barno being back are extremely thin.
