Michael Irvin on Cam

So let someone else break the bank and mortgage their future.

Just because someone else is willing to do that doesn't mean we should

In regards to us "breaking the bank", there has been nothing more than pure speculation on potential contract figures for Cam.

All this $25 million a season nonsense has come from people with pretty much less than zero inside knowledge.

We simply do not know anything yet. So those throwing their arms up in the air and saying things like "let someone else mortgage their future" are doing so based on emotion more than anything really. But then again it's the huddle we are talking about, so it's expected.

It's a hypothetical question, and therefore gets a hypothetical answer.

I love DG but he messed up releasing Steve Smith, we would have sick passing offense with Smith/Benjamin/Olsen.

No doubt in my mind that Smith/Benjamin would have been a top 3 WR duo in the NFL this year.

Smitty can obviously still play at a high level.  Releasing him makes no sense from an on the field perspective.  Regardless of what G'man has said, I firmly believe that Smitty was released because G'man knew he was taking a WR early and didn't want Smitty around to influence the guy.  We all loved Smitty on the field and in interviews, but I can definitely see how he may not have been the greatest influence in the locker room around a young WR.

As an aside, Irvin is a huge fan of Kelvin Benjamin.

He made a great pre-draft comment about Benjamin when NFL Network did their mock show.  Irvin said (paraphrasing) you can scheme your defense to cover every single direction on the field, except up.

Jesus.  That's brilliant.

That is why I will continue to have my feelings towards Cam's upcoming contract. I saw if his agent is looking for a massive contract, let Cam walk. Our offensive scheme doesn't call for a dynamic QB like Cam. If you are going to play him like a game manager, then why not just start DA or draft another rookie QB for pennies?

We let Cam walk and we jump into the top 4 teams with Los Angeles as our new homein the next 3 years.  JR doesn't have 10 more years.  He's lucky if he has 3.

Keep Cam and we have a decent shot at one Lombardi over the next 10 years.  Let him walk we have 2% at the Championship and a high probability of becoming butt buddies with the Raiders in a shared stadium in Azusa.

Do the right thing.

who did he influence negatively in the past that would suggest it would happen with KB? I don't think it has anything to do with KB.I just don't get that at all.

How many WRs drafted during Smitty's time here developed into anything?  I'm not saying that's entirely on Smitty, but I think it's plausible to think that Gettleman may have come to the conclusion that Smitty being around young, developing WRs might not be the best thing for the future of the Carolina Panthers.  I don't think it's a coincidence that the WRs he signed in Cotchery and Avant are both consummate professionals.

I say that is exactly the kind of player you want them to be around. That's why I asked about the negative influence. That would be beyond performance on the field and I have not heard of any ever.

way to casually gloss over what i said. my post still rips yours apart.

we just got KB who is on pace to have a randy moss type of rookie year. That is a major, major deal. 2 drafts with DG we just drafted a soon to be superstar at WR. whose to say we aren't gonna get another talent at WO next year?

right now we have Olsen a top 5 TE (who is basically a close to 1,000 yard WR) and KB an up and coming talent Cam can grow with.

we do not lack talent on O, we just need more of it. And i'm positive that will come with good drafting.

I know Philly Brown was just filling in for a veteran last week but he did more than hold his own.  He caught almost everything and with the speed he has that is a legitimate threat to any team.

I don't give a rats butt if we found him in some semi pro team in BF Egypt.   The young man is improving each week as a rookie should.  G-man may have nailed in on draft Hurney never did.  That was draft a WR that became something.

I am concerned about the $$$$.  Hopefully, Cam realizes that he can break the bank and get paid or he can get a good contract that helps him win super bowls.   I hope it is the latter.  Cam's endorsements probably pay him on nice fat addition to his annual salary with the Panthers.
