"Surprise, surprise! WR Smith in pads at practice

Panthers WR Steve Smith just emerged from the locker room minutes ago in full pads and apparently will practice today. I’m not sure how much Smith will do today, but it’s good to see him ready to go. He must be a pretty quick healer.

Smith injured his shoulder in Monday night’s practice and sat out the last three days.

Coach John Fox said previously that he expected Smith to be ready for the regular season and that he might even play some in the preseason."

Smith returns: Update

Receiver Steve Smith has returned to practice this morning, four days after hurting his shoulder. Running back Jonathan Stewart (sore Achilles) is missing another practice. Smith caught a few passes in drills early on, but didn't participate in contact drills later in the practice. Afterward, coach John Fox said he didn't know if Smith would play Monday in the team's exhibition opener against the New York Giants, but said Smith is "OK." Other players missing morning practice were LB Thomas Davis (knee), S Nate Salley (knee), G C.J. Davis (ankle). -- David Scott

i was out there thi morning and he looked fine. i watched him work with kenny moore after practice for a bit. lemme tell you, that talk of him having a strong passing arm are no joke. the guy has a rocket on him. he overthrew moore one time by quite a bit.

no contact stuff, like what has been said but that isn't surprising. he did make a couple nice grabs, though. wouldn't expect anything less.

Would be entertaining to see that in a game sometime... if it works especially

Smith was asked if he'd be ready to play in the team's first exhibition next Monday against the New York Giants.

"I know," Smith said, "but I won't say. And nobody's told me not to say anything."

Smith participated in light drills early in Friday morning's practice, but was held out of contact drills later. He tried to get into one of them, but was called back by coach John Fox.

"I was out there, but coach told me to go to the sideline," Smith said. "I went back and I think I shocked him because I was putting my mouthpiece back in. He said, 'Did you hear me?' and I said, 'I'm not going to debate you.' " -- David Scott

    • No, you're right. It doesn't mean you can't call out his flaws and poor play. But it also doesn't mean you can't admit when he plays well and shows improvement. Not you personally, just in general I mean.
    • I will say, I do think there's a version of Bryce that could be really successful as a high-volume passer in a spread-based offense built around quick throws and timing-based intermediate throws with deeper throws schemed up around them. I actually think the power run based offense we're running is a poor fit for Bryce as it requires him to play under center far more often. It's a very traditional offensive approach whereas I think a scheme that spreads defenses out and lets Bryce distribute the ball quickly with anticipation and accuracy is the sweet spot for him. The key, of course, is to find a way to run the ball efficiently out of those formations. Our personnel right now (backs and OL) aren't good fits for that style of offense and I'm not sure it's a scheme Dave Canales favors very much either.
    • I root for him, and I hope for the best, as does essentially everyone. But that doesn’t mean you can’t call out flaws and bad plays. And that’s what a lot of people get wrong.  I hope I’m wrong and that he continues to improve a lot, I just doubt it. But I’ve been wrong before
