For my own amusement....

Me personally, I would love an OC who runs a Air Coryell offense. Which is why I wanted Norv Turner in the offseason even though I knew we weren't going to get him. We have one of the most dynamic young QB's in the league and we need to "unleash" him.

What a perfect type of offense for Cam. Even though we don't have the fastest receivers in the NFL, we have very good ones (especially Kelvin) who can adjust to the deep pass. This offense calls for a pocket quarterback with a strong arm, which is exactly what Cam has. And, if plays blow up downfield, Cam can escape the pocket and just terrorize defenses. This also calls for a strong inside running game, which I think we could develop if we ever got an identity on offense. Even though our O-line at the time isn't very good, our most potential is our two guards and center. God knows Bell and Chandler can't runblock for crap. The reason I love this offense is because we could strike at any time with explosive, deep throws to Kelvin, Avant, or Philly while also controlling the clock like Rivera likes. It also includes mid range passing to Greg Olsen and our backs in open space. Overall, this offense is perfect for us. We could eat the clock up, while also posing the threat of explosive plays downfield.

That's just my take on it. I'm just tired of seeing a Shula offense where we snap the ball at the last second, having zero explosive plays, zero creativity, running the ball when we are down 21, and playing Cam like he is a game manager. I know this was talked about in another thread, I just wanted to include my take on it.

Your take is appreciated....so in your opinion you would have cam in a pass first offense? I would agree I feel his arm needs to be utilized with the right WRs it could be something special

Yep. Our main weapons on offense are Cam, Kelvin, and Olsen, so why not utilize all of them in a pass first offense. That will, in turn, open up our running game. Long gone are the days where we were a power running team. So instead of running it to open up the passing game, we should pass it to open up our running game. We need to play to our strengths, which is another reason I dislike SHula so much. He never makes adjustments. He sticks to his philsophy and never switches up no matter the circumstances (see last week). Also, I think Philly and Kelvin would absolutely flourish in a Coryell offense. Still need a couple more pieces to make it work, but I would love to hire somebody that runs this system. We have a beast QB, we need to showcase him.

So, what about Ramsdell? Sometimes the answer is on the.... roster? John Ramsdell came from the Don Coryell coaching style, along with Mike Martz, Dick Vermeil and Norv Turner. He more than knows offense, and could provide the scheme we're all wanting so badly. Look what he did with guys like Warner and Bulger in the "Greatest Show on Turf" days. Look what he did with Rivers. He could take Cam to the next level with ease IMO.

Absolutely. I was kind of hinting towards that. Of course it won't happen this year since it takes time to get familiar with the offense, but I would love to give Ramsdell a shot at OC. That's why I think he was brought in. Throw in bits of the Coryell offense every here and there throughout the season, let Ramsdell get familiar with the players, and then replace Shula after the year. Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but I wouldn't mind that one bit.

Yeah, I don't think any change happens this season either. You can already see bits of the Coryell if you think about it. We've taken a lot of shots down field, more so than last year's rate for sure. It also uses a heavy dose of the run game that we haven't been able to establish. Where you see Shula's influence is in the tight, ultra traditional, formations. Would be nice to spread it out, more like the Coryell style, but we may not get to see it with Shula at the helm.

Absolute hell no to anyone named Gruden (or Ryan, for that matter).

Gruden would change the entire offensive system to a West Coast Offense which, since we spent the entire offseason retooling with Coryell type receivers, would force us to have to remake our receiving corps all over again.

Add in that Gruden became less and less effective as a coach during his time in Tampa.  By the time he was done his players hated him so much they told the Tampa brass they wouldn't play for him anymore.  that's why he was fired.

People who watch Gruden gab on Monday Night Football might like him, but people who've actually looked at his record know to steer clear.

Oh, definitely. It is very noticeable, especially on every one of our first drives this season. We come out swinging, passing the ball downfield, then it's like we go back to the Shula offense once we get into the redzone. I think we start to see a lot more of it as the season goes along.

I actually do like Gruden on MNF. Don't want him as a coach though. He's stated before, if he comes back, he wants full control. I think that would be a disaster. I wouldn't give keys to the organization to very many people, especially not Gruden.

The thing that makes me pause about Ramsdell is that if you look at his resume', the only thing he's ever done is position coaching.  He's never been a coordinator, so this would be new to him.

On the flipside, he's coached every position group on offense except O-Line at one point or another, and his biggest success has been as a quarterbacks coach.  Generally speaking, the QB Coach is the first guy you look at as a potential OC.

Mind you, with us that's actually Ken Dorsey.  Ramsdell is officially a 'senior offensive assistant'.  And while I could conceivably ponder a scenario where Dorsey gets the OC job and Ramsdell backfills, that's extremely hard to imagine because Dorsey's only been a pro coach of any kind for 2 years.  Ramsdell has been coaching in some capacity or another since 1972.

For those thinking Proehl could take the job, again it's possible but Proehl hasn't been an NFL coach much longer than Dorsey has.  Yes he was a longtime player, but that's still a stretch.

I sincerely doubt Shula gets bumped, but if he does and the replacement is on the staff I gotta think it's either Ramsdell or Jim Skipper.  Probably Ramsdell.

(and quick FYI guys.  Our current offense is a Coryell)
