Us sucking D on Defense, is it the coaches or the talent?

Recommended Posts

Yep. It's a talent thing and age thing. Mitchell and Captain were average in coverage but were very young and quick and could make up for misreads. Harper and Decoud are too old and slow

Decoud and Mitchell would've been a better duo at safety then Decoud and Harper.

The biggest problem is the pass rush and stopping the run. We are designed to put teams in 3rd and long. Then on 3rd down we force a quick pass and make the tackle or get the sack.

Right now we are losing on 1st and 2nd down. Andy Dalton had all day to pick us apart. Thomas Decoud takes bad angles. We depend on Decoud as the last line of defense if we bust a gap and he can't do it.

At one point Andy Dalton converted like a 1st and 15 on the read option because we played it so terribly. That was like Jordan getting dunked on by Matt Carrol.

Hugh Jackson is a brilliant football mind and he whipped Ron schematically.

Shame those two minds could not exist together...

It's the coaches inability to call a defense with the personnel they have. They fall back into calling a defense that relies on defensive pressure from the DEs. They have a secondary that needs pressure on the QB.

So you need DEs who require double teams, or you commit 5 at the line of scrimmage to win the numbers game.

Harper and DeCoud take the shittiest angles. Cason lacks speed and physicality. Our DB's are not getting off blocks and even when they do they're taking bad angles. Hopefully the safeties will both have good games against their former teams because that's their biggest value right now.

I think the loss of Hardy had a greater effect on this defense then a lot on here want to admit. We are at our best when our front four is creating pressure on their own.

Well yeah. But Charles Johnson isn't playing well independent of that. He's losing 1v1 on nearly every play. Maybe he's hurt but we need him to step up, he hasn't.

    • Like many of the old heads, I’ve been here for a long time.  I got a lot of respect for everyone on this board for your dedication to this team.  We’ve all been through it during the tougher years. At this point in life, I’m not one to judge anyone’s level of dedication, or their reasons why anymore.  Time, and a lot of bad football, will do that.  For me, it’s simple.  We share a common bond.  For that, I love and appreciate all of you crazy SOB’s. For me, last season was at a minimum, entertaining.  BY lead a young team to multiple come from behind 4th qtr wins.  That showed me heart, and that he has the clutch gene.  That’s the wildcard intangible.  For me, that was fun to watch even  if it was mindbogglingly frustrating at times.  Over the past two seasons, we have progressively built a better team around him.  On paper, the defense should be better this season.  That’ll help.  Let’s see what he can do as the other guys continue to develop too.  Besides, his contract is cheap for a few more years, and we just made some smart cap decisions during the draft. Let’s see how it shakes out.

    • I would very much liked to have seen Jake Delhomme's career if Tommy Jone no hurt Jake.  I just know that roster and the leadership were destined to hit paydirt but Jake was never the same after the elbow injury, and unfortunately he was the sole reason they didn't make it back to the big one.  I think that 08 team was the best in the league, and Jake masked his inability well all season til the Arizona game put it all on display.  I'll go back to the season prior even and say the 07 team was primed to be a competitor.  Jake was off to a fantastic start that year (for a Panthers QB).  They may have been a championship caliber club for a few seasons after 08 too.
