Us sucking D on Defense, is it the coaches or the talent?

Recommended Posts

it was meant kinda tongue n cheek but going against popular opinion on the huddle probably means you're on to something.

Wasnt tryna mock your post just surprising to hear since Shula was suspect #1 not too long ago. His play-calling these past two weeks has been spot on in my opinion.

i agree, im more of a lack of execution by the players guy rather than taking the sell-out route blaming the play callers.  that olsen TD play was beautiful.

Lots of one on one match ups being lost. Hell Star is looking like Fua out there because of the loss of Hardy. Its like we just rebuilt the offense to dismantle the defense.

I really don't understand what's going on with Star.  He's not the same player at all.  I wonder if there's an injury situation we don't know about?  I just don't get it.  I haven't been paying all that much attention to him individually, so maybe he's just been facing a lot more double teams now that Hardy is out and CJ is limited.

Honestly I think its just a lack of trusting the guy next to you. CJ is in a slump and for some reason Cole is playing beside him and beside Cole is just a joe at DE. Really need some fire on that line that Hardy brings and no one has stepped up.

Rivera can talk all day about the next man up but we just dont have that man. We have backups and its hurting our game plan.

we dont have the talent in the secondary to play lock-down, press man coverage to help our pass rush.  that is a lack of talent.  instead, we play zone, keep the ball in front of us and depend on the pass rush to be disruptive, which it hasnt enough, also a lack of talent and some scheme.  maybe this next offseason we can bring in some man coverage talent.

I think not having a pass rush has forced us to blitz Luke and TD more. If we send both on a blitz that lets the Rb take one cut and avoid our best tacklers. we have a D that is based of front 4 pressure not doing there job. We are forced to adjust, and it is a work in progress.

that and we predominately play a cover 3, so the qb knows where the open spots are the majority of the time.  and without that deadly pass rush from last year, that zone gets picked apart.  Rogers may put on a display next week.

The defensive line isn't performing as well as expected.  Charles Johnson seems to be less effective without a genuine passrush from the opposite DE.  Short is showing flashes, but also some of the inconsistency that plagued him at Purdue.  Kuechly has missed on his gap responsibility multiple times.  Charles Godfrey simply isn't good enough at corner to play in the NFL.  He'll be out of the league next season.  The new safeties have not been impressive.  On the long return at the end of regulation in the Cincinnati game, Roman Harper failed to attack the ball carrier Adam Jones in the hole, instead breaking down and allowing Jones to cut left, embarrassing the kicker and breaking free down the left sideline.  A breakdown of fundamentals might seem like a coaching failure, but Harper is a grey-haired veteran and Kuechly is considered one of the smartest defensive players in the league.  More likely Kuechly is pressing because the D-line isn't creating the chaos expected.  Frank Alexander's suspension means that no relief is in sight.  Aaron Rodgers will certainly test the defense at least as much as Andy Dalton.
