What is the Cam Newton standard?

So I was watching Dave Dameshek and Bucky Brooks on a segment where they were talking about teams that can make the playoffs in the NFC after week 6. Bucky Brooks says CAR isn't one of them, right there, Dameshek stops him and goes on to praise Cam. He says with no firepower, Cam has kept CAR alive.

This was Bucky Brooks' reply: "Its an unbelievable standard that Cam Newton is held to that some other QBs aren't held to the same standard. I think we still expect him to be superman but we have not given him enough to do heroic things."

So fellow huddlers, what is the Cam Newton standard, who set this standard? Is it fair or unfair?

When drafted I just wanted someone that gave us a chance. Now, fair or not, the GOAT is my standard. To whom much is given, much is expected. So far, I have not been disappointed. He has been to this stage of his career and I fully believe he's on his way.

Yes but why? Why do people feel like he has to do it alone? Is it because he is 6'5" 250lbs?

Because he really is THAT talented, and people expect him to be able to take games over by himself and win a game involving 21 other people on his team, by himself. It is like how Lebron was treated before he won a title. It's not hard to see that pound for pound Cam is pretty much the most individually talented player in the league.

yes its because he is 6'5" 250lbs can truck linebackers, can superman dive over his offensive lineman and has a laser rocket arm and he won a national championship at the juco and division 1 level and was drafted #1 overall.

its like what people have said about him. if you were building a quarterback it would be cam newton. it clouds peoples judgement about this being a TEAM sport. Cam figured that out around year 2.

it's the lebron thing.

seriously most gifted athlete at the most important position people expect him to win it by himself.

That and the fact that they hate him as much as people hated Lebron for a few years, which is absurd since neither Lebron or Newton are societal menaces.

Name one reason why Cam Newton should be "hated" by anyone who doesn't hate the Panthers in general?

So everyone has lionized Luck as the next legend, and criticized Cam Newton from day one and said that he's a fraud and won't pan out, and your standard for Newton is "Greatest of All-Time"?

People like you are the main problem.

My standard for Cam is not to overthrow most of his passes, to make smart plays, and not be the reason the team loses. If the other guys do their jobs, Cam can lead them to a Super Bowl. I just want to see him win one primarily because of his play so ESPN can be told to kiss his @$$.

Actually I was watching a segment on CBS by Boomer et al on building the perfect QB. They had Luck for the body and Cam was not mentioned for any of the other parts.

    • Didn't  see this posted (since 2023) but since folks have been posting that you can't judge a draft class for three years (a ridiculous take), I thought I'd post this to see what people thought about the 2023 draft. Unfortunately this may not be the most interesting class to do this with but I do quite like retrospective draft grades. Would appreciate other's takes on this (and other recent) draft classes.   1(1) - Bryce Young QB: I am a bigger Bryce Young apologist than most (maybe all). I like the kid. But there is no way around it: This was a terrible pick. If he had been picked in the 4th or even the 3rd round I would feel pretty good about it. But this was the first overall pick that we gave up two firsts, our best offensive player to get.  GRADE: C -    2(39) - Jonathan Mingo WR: not much to say here here. He was here for two years. His yards per catch are on par with Bryce's yards per pass. Rough stuff. To date he has still never scored a touchdown in the NFL GRADE: F   3(80) - DJ Johnson OLB: a pick I hated as soon as it happened and an example of why the premise of this thread is honestly dumb. This was a bad pick when it happened. Most people knew it.  Then came training camp and he did not look good. Then came the preseason which confirmed what we saw in TC. Then came the season which confirmed what we saw in preseason. To date, he has half a sack in his career. GRADE: F 4 (114) Chandlers Zavala G: Honestly the best pick of this draft which really speaks to how awful this draft is. Other than Bryce, the only pick still on the team. He is mostly average or below average depth which in round 4 is not terrible. But he had a pff score of 43.5 and though I think people have unrealistic expectations for draft picks, I still would want a little more from a fourth round pick GRADE: C+   5 (145) - Jammie Robinson S: I liked the pick when it happened but ended up being a disappointment. He logged 1 tackle with the falcons last year and not enough snaps to get a grade on PFF.  GRADE: F OVERALL DRAFT GRADE: F
