Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare

CoD went too crazy with the killstreaks and rewarding bad people with easy killstreaks too.

I loved CoD4, in fact it may be my favorite game ever. I played it hardcore for two years straight. The simplicity of having UAV/airstrike/chopper worked really well. The maps were well designed with spawns that were predictable yet avoidable with some map awareness. You had to be "good" to do well on that game. Now it's a cakewalk to have a 2-2.5 k/d ratio. CoD4 was focused on gun play with killstreaks mixed in, whereas the next games focused on camping to get killstreaks and some gun play in the middle.

I had a 2.7 k/d in black ops, and it just wasn't fun anymore. There was no true competition.

I was hardcore CoD up through probably Black Ops 2.  Then it feels like they went off the rails.  I LOVED everything up to that point.  I bought Ghosts on Black Friday because it was cheap, but I didn't open it until like a month or two ago and I immediately thought, "I should've left it packaged and sold it."  I played it once and IT SUCKED.  Just feels like it went way too "arcadey" (if that's not a word, mark it down, I just made it one).

The dynamics changed, I didn't like the graphics, and it just felt too convoluted from the customizing of your character to the weapons system...  it was just stupid, and confusing, and it definitely didn't hold my interest long enough to care to figure it out.

I kept seeing this one advertised, but to tell you how much the direction of the franchise pushed me away, I went from buying MW2, MW3, BO, and BO2 at midnight on release night to not even knowing this one came out until a day or two after.

For my shooters, I actually have become more of a BF guy because it plays more as a sim (compared to COD) and offers more diversity with map size, rewards/unlocks system, and vehicles.

I'm more of a Halo guy myself. Reach is the best shooter that I have played personally.

I haven't played CoD outside of a few games here or there on other people's consoles since MW3, but a buddy I trust (who also hasn't played a CoD since MW3) told me I should get it. Well, here are my observations:

The campaign is a lot of fun. Haven't had a lot of time to beat it yet, but I'm just past the stealth mission (for those who have any idea where that is in the story line). I really enjoy the movement, honestly. I thought the whole futuristic thing would make it feel contrived, but I think they pull it off well. Some GREAT sequences in the game. A quick-time event or two that made my jaw drop. Good stuff.

I've played a couple of hours of multiplayer. Here's what I got.

On core, there is a lot of Halo-esque jumping. Those players generally suck and get lit up (at least, from what i saw). I utilize the exo suit simply to help me traverse the map, and not as a means of avoiding fire. Why? Because it simply doesn't work unless you're near a corner. They have it well balanced, really. My first game in, I went 18-8 on TDM. Lead the whole lobby. I spent most of the game figuring out the map and just picking off the idiots jumping around. Then I got in a party with a friend and played hardcore....holy poo. Much different feel. Good bit of camping, though. A lot of leveled guys who obviously have put massive hours in already. It will take some time before I get over that and can catch up, but I enjoy it when there is less camping and the other team is actually moving.

Shooting is very fluid, and I like the pick 13 system. Forces you to really think about your loadout in terms of how you'll be playing, rather than just pick the best gun available and go nuts. I prefer a stealthier, slower approach. My loadout reflects that, and I'm doing decent with it.

Overall, I'm enjoying this game, and I never thought I'd buy another CoD again. May it get old to me as I play? Sure. May the 10 year olds who have terrible parents annoy me? Certainly. But for a game to burn what little leisure time I have, I enjoy it.

    • WR: Nico, Woods, Tank (R) TE: Schultz OL: Tunsil/Howard/Deiter/Mason/Fant vs. WR: Chark, Thielen, Mingo (R) TE: Hurst OL: Icky/Zavala (R)/Bozeman/Jensen (R)/Moton   Panthers' had the better OL before losing BC week 1 and AC week 4 which is kind of ironic considering how in the following year DB went down in W1 and Shaq in W4 resulting in the defense going all to Hell. CJ has done amazing in Houston, but he also wasn't asked to carry Zavala, Jensen, Mingo, Hurst, and Chark as a rookie.
    • Past 5 seasons, IMO CJ Stroud and Joe Burrow are the 2 best young QBs that have emerged in the league in that window.  They also didn’t need vets to be their primary pass catchers.  They helped fellow youngsters be great at WR.   almost all the other young QBs have been paired up with vets in their top options….and haven’t been as promising.  so it isn’t Madden.  But the league hasn’t played out as you suggest it does.   Good QBs make others around them better.
    • In 2023 their roster wasn’t stacked. They nailed the poo out of the 2023 draft and since they knew Davis Mills wasn’t the guy, they tanked properly to get pick 2. They also took Cleveland’s ridiculous offer for Watson unlike us with Burns. Houston received enough draft capital to jump up to 3 while picking up the right guys in Anderson and Stroud. The Texans were not stacked or better than us in 2023. They had 11 total wins from 2020 to 2022. They didn’t have a terrible front office so they made sure they got their QB of the future while tanking well and getting more draft picks. They are a textbook study of what we should have done in 2022/2023 offseason even though people in here still think tanking is a bad word and our culture would be bad if we were the Texans. We literally had the chance to be the Texans right now and fuged it up.
