In the discussion of potential head coaches (granted, Rivera isn't an absolute lock to be fired) a lot of people are interested in Hue Jackson.

 

So let's talk a little bit about him...

 

Jackson has been a head coach once before, but only for a year, and with the Raiders.  Some would say that doesn't amount to a real opportunity (Mike Shanahan used to say his time coaching the Raiders didn't count) but it's worth noting that in that one season, he led the Raiders to an 8-8 record.  Not bad for a first time head coach working for a lousy organization.

 

Now, you can rightly say "Yeah, that one season was decent, but it is just one season."  To which the responding argument would likely be "Well, that's one season more than a lot of other guys have."

 

Likewise, as a coordinator or an assistant, Jackson has a pretty consistent record of success.  he's known to be a pretty solid offensive mind and he runs a Coryell system, so the base offensive principles wouldn't require that much adjustment if Jackson were hired as the head coach.

 

So what's the downside?

 

Weeellllll, let's talk a little about his personality :unsure:

 

If you watched Hard Knocks during the seasons they covered the Bengals, you've got a bit of a head start on this discussion.  Jackson can be a lot like Steve Smith in that what makes him good at his job also gives him a bad habit of rubbing people the wrong way.  And while a coach isn't generally meant to be a good PR person, bad working relationships can and often do have an effect on a team (just ask the people who work with Jim Harbaugh).

 

Being abrasive can also make job interviews a bit of an adventure.  One of the reasons it took Mike Zimmer a long time to get a head coaching job was that some GMs and owners found him a little too blunt.  Zimmer is the kind of guy whom, if asked "Does this make me look fat?" would likely respond "Hell yes, it makes you look fat!  Sh-t, how the f--k did you let your ass get that big?  Looks like a f--king side of beef!" :blink:

 

Jackson's been known to be kinda like that too.  Ironically enough, Jackson and Zimmer were known to clash occasionally when they were on the Bengals staff together, though it was generally understood they respected each other's abilities.  You do have to kinda wonder how well he'd get along with a guy like Dave Gettleman or, for that matter, Jerry Richardson (who famously didn't get along with the super high strung Bill Polian).

 

Of course, Jackson would be spending more time with players than with brass.  And while most players expect a coach to be gruff, there are some who have been known to not respond all that well to guys like Jackson.  How well would Cam Newton, Luke Kuechly, Greg Olsen, Thomas Davis and others respond to someone like that?

 

So what's your verdict?  Interested?  Hopeful?  Better options elsewhere?  No chance he gets hired here?  What?

Olsen, Kuechly, and Davis could probably adapt to whatever kind of coach the Panthers hire. As long as they believe in their ability to coach, I think most players can deal with almost anyone as long as he isn't just batpoo crazy. Cam, on the other hand, I'm not too sure about. If the Panthers do find themselves looking for a new coach this offseason, I think how Cam would mesh with him is very important, assuming they do want him to be their franchise QB.

Given some of his recent social media comments, I feel fairly certain Antoine Cason wouldn't last too long.

I wouldn't be opposed to it, but he wouldn't be my first choice. 

 

At the very least, he'll be an offensive minded coach.  That's the biggest thing to me.  A coach whose goal is not to stop the other team from scoring (because realistically, that's not possible in today's NFL) but to score more than the other team.  A core philosophical change is needed here.

 

And as pointed out in the OP, if he can take the RAIDERS to 8-8 then hell he's worth a shot.  I'd be interested in who he brings in as his staff.

The reason Hue Jackson didn't work in Oakland is because he was a control freak.  Does anyone actually think the relationship between Hue Jackson and Dave Gettleman (or any GM, really) would work out?

 

I think he will eventually get another shot at head coach but I feel like he is one of those guys much better off as a coordinator.

I'd go back and look at his Raiders staff, but if I remember right he was already the OC on Tom Cable's staff and got promoted when Cable was let go.  So it'd be fairly safe to say that staff likely didn't necessarily reflect a lot of his own choices.

      Please don't tell me you just averaged the QB ratings of all of Shough's starts to declare his QB rating as better 😂 I hope you don't actually believe that's how it works.  Otherwise please show your math on Shough's QB rating as a starter. Thanks for including Shough's 2.6 more Rushing YPG in this comparison, really doesn't feel at all like you're desperately grasping for as many straws as you can here. The truth is, it takes a statistical bottom-tier starting QB like Bryce Young to make Shough look simply OK by comparison.  And that bottom-tier starting QB still, by your own admission, puts up more points for his offense than Shough.  You're framing this as damning for Bryce, but in reality the fact that him and Bryce are so neck-and-neck is shining Shough in a very poor light. Yes Shough is a rookie and Young is a 3rd year starter, which is why I circle back to my position of Shough having a "pretty solid, encouraging rookie season" whereas you're fanboying over him.  Never mind that Shough is 2 years older than Bryce though.  Normally yes a QB's experience in the league is invaluable...but Bryce is kind of a unique situation considering the biggest complaint with him is he is too physically limited to succeed in the league.  Do we think a QB can overcome severe physical limitations simply with experience?  Also I remember wayyyy back (/s) when we cared so much about DJ Johnson being an older rookie and our standard for them being that they're more NFL-ready and able to contribute sooner rather than later.  But now all of a sudden Shough is just a poor little 26-year-old rookie on an awful team.  Seriously...the way you frame everything around Shough is straight out of a fanfic.  Constantly referencing with tears in your eyes how he's succeeding against all odds on such an awful team.  Meanwhile the Saints' D is 14th in PPG and their offense (led by Shough) is 29th in PPG.  Telling me how the Saints managed a win on Shough's shoulders against the Jets last week who put up...*checks notes*...6 points against the Saints' D.  Yes god bless the savior Shough who willed his team to victory against those juggernauts led by Brady Cook.  Never mind how Taysom Hill threw as many touchdowns in 1 passing attempt as Shough did in 49 passing attempts.  Yikes.
