Ryan Kalil's cap figure next year is 11+m

It's not only the cap hit but also how terribly these contracts were structured. Both CJ and Kalil, their prorated bonuses (essentially dead money) are larger parts of their cap hit than their actual base salary. This puts the team in a horrible position trying to get them to take paycuts if they don't live up to their contracts.

CJ - Base salary: $9,750,000 - Bonus money: $10,020,000

Kalil - Base salary: $5,366,000 - Bonus money: $6,179,000

If, for example, Kalil had a 12M cap hit with 11M base salary and only 1M bonus money it would put the team in 1000X better position to negotiate a paycut, because they would have leverage. If Kalil got cut he wouldn't make 11M on the open market, so of course he'd be better off taking a paycut in line with what his market value would be. Howver, with the huge amount of guaranteed already paid dead money, and his base salary being only $5.3M of the near $12M cap hit, there's not much the team can do.

Compared to Gano's contract (the only real multi-year deal DG has given out)

Base salary: $2,300,000 - Bonus money: $750,000

after 2 years of G-man at least we over paid some good players.

Even an All-Pro looks like trash when surrounded by trash alla Cam

he doesnt help ANYONE either. he is often left there standing blocking nobody.

Why the fug would a defensive lineman with a brain try to get through or by an all pro when he can step to either side of him and go through  any one of four guys who are trash ?

If you are the DL coach preparing for the next game, your focus is on the o-line and how to get around them. So you ask, which lineman is the best and the answer for the Panthers is Kalil. So that is the lineman you scheme for and the best scheme is avoidance. Why do you think those 9 sacks came primarily from only 3 or 4 down lineman? Because they ignored Kalil and bum rushed the others. Kalil tried to help, but which fire do you put out when there's more than one and you don't know which way your QB will go?

Which leads to: instant pocket collapse; no escape route for Cam; can't throw the ball away because the QB is still within the tackle box even if it is 20 yards back; many sacks of your QB. Shula was sending in plays to try and counteract the guard & tackle collapse. Running up the middle behind Kalil & Norwell, running to the right if we did try running outside (notice we stopped running left in 2nd half). Double TE's on the line. An extra lineman reporting. Quick check downs. Quick screen passes. But Philly's go-for-broke rush from the outside was so effective, it too often negated anything we tried.

So, no, you don't get rid of your only good o-lineman.

i dont think i ever suggested getting rid of him. i even concluded that everyone is playing bad, even our best players. while game planning around him is probably true to an extent, if he is as good as his money suggests, he shouldnt be standing there watching others get beat so often.
