Tom Coughlin revisited

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

So a while back we had a thread suggesting Tom Coughlin as a potential head coaching option.

Worth noting that the Giants have had plenty of opportunities to fire Coughlin but have never done so, and still might not even after the awful season they're having this year (two Super Bowl rings buys you a lot of deference).

But supposing for a moment that they did, or came to an agreement that Coughlin would 'retire'...

I don't really see Coughlin becoming a head coach again (why should he) but it should be remembered that Coughlin actually had full control of the Jacksonville Jaguars in his eight years as head coach there.  He is still to this day their most successful head coach (Jack Del Rio is second) and the only Jags coach with a win-loss record over 500.  As far as overall success, Coughlin's Jaguars were actually more consistent than the Panthers were in those early seasons.

Coughlin is also known to be a good friend of Panthers GM Dave Gettleman.

Should this be Coughlin's final year with the Giants, how would you feel about him coming aboard in some sort of personnel related role?  Perhaps also serving as an information resource to a new head coach (were one to be hired)?

(for those wondering, Coughlin is 68)

I'm against it, I think.

I want to see DG's vision for this team.  Much like Fox and Rivera, Coughlin is pretty conservative, and I think that we need some outside the box thinking.

I reserve the right to change my mind at any point though.

But even if Rivera weren't fired, Coughlin could still teach him a thing or two about coaching.

He could certainly. I just doubt Rivera would listen once the ball is kicked off. He seems to be insecure in that regard. Doesn't really want anyone around that could challenge his decision making.

Gettleman would still be in charge, though.

Im thinking of Coughlin in a role like 'Director of Player Personnel' or something along those lines (we currently don't have one of those).  Heck, he could even work as a consultant of some sort.

Honestly, the more I think about the idea, the more I like it.

I hear ya, I just don't think that the Giants have been all that special, even with the 2 Lombardi's.

That's one of the "premier" teams in the NFL, and he can't make that thing humm?

Tomlin is in that same type place for me.

No.  Coughlin has nothing left to gain or prove.  It'd end up a lot like Mike Holmgren in Cleveland.  He should just retire with his outstanding career and be happy.

Let's get some young ambitious coaches in here.  Darrell Bevell is my favorite choice to be the next head coach.

Two Lombardis is two more than we have, though :(

But remember, I'm not talking about Coughlin as a head coach, though I do think a coach with two rings could be a pretty valuable resource to a new head coach.  Maybe even to Rivera.

Personnel-wise, go back to the Jaguar days.  Look at some of the free agent choices Coughlin made and some of the drafts he ran.

We'd be using him more like the Jaguars did than the Giants.

Not totally opposed to it, I just want someone other than Holmgren/Parcells/Coughlin whispering into the ear of our next HC.  Want to come in and work with DG on longterm outlooks for the Panthers....I'm cool, however I'm nervous about the "old NFL" guys and how they view the HC position.

I could be talked into it though.

I wouldn't be opposed to Coughlin in either a management or coaching role. He knows how to win with less talent than we have. I mean, he won two super bowls with Eli manning...he had a very good d-line and sometimes good receivers, but nowhere else has that team had particularly good players but those two position groups. At least we know we'd have someone who knows how to coach/lead a team.

    • It’s wild to me that so many of you guys are threatened by the idea of an opposing team fan who is polite in 2025. He’s been posting here on and off for years, usually when our teams play each other which hasn’t been for a while. I’d maybe understand this treatment if it was a falcons or saints fan, but packers fans in general are one of the nicer fan bases as long as you aren’t another NFC north team (especially the bears).
    • Some players excel on the big stage, while others freeze and succumb to the pressure. I’m not convinced Cam took a dive. I think he didn’t handle the stage very well. The pressure got to him and he folded. He wouldn’t be the first quarterback or player to struggle in a Super Bowl. Two HOF examples - John Elway and Jim Kelly. The 2002 MVP, Rich Gannon, threw 5 interceptions against the Bucs. Poor performances happen.  Unless of course you believe all these players threw the games they played in, but if that occurred, surely someone by now would have admitted taking a dive? 🤷‍♂️
    • It was always a matter of time with Cam’s playing style and a shorter shelf life than passers that protect themselves. I suppose Cam could have still been playing in 2028 ten years after the hit took place, but he would need to have evolved as a quarterback and become more of a passer than the dual threat maestro he was. It’s sad because it makes us think of what could have been, but I do feel it was always a matter of time until all the hits took their toll.
