The Nightmare Scenario

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

So if the Panthers December performance turns out to be not good enough to get us to the playoffs but good enough that it saves the jobs of most - or even all - of the coaching staff, how do you expect you'll react?

If we don't make the playoffs many of the coaching positions will change.  Not necessarily RR but the rest with exception to Prohel.  Can't guarantee Shula even if we make the playoffs.

I don't fear the staff staying. I don't 'fear', but do worry, about lucking into the right OT, making the correct hard choices against the cap, regaining a good pass rush and defensive dominance.

When I think of nightmare scenarios, I dig into the past for things like a player being arrested for murder and a former player being murdered within the same year.  I think about a beloved coach/player dying of cancer.  Hell, Cam having been in a car accident is a shitload worse than wondering how much no-huddle Shula would let Cam run (or based on viewpoint, how much Rivera would let Shula run).

You forget any context here.  We didn't struggle in 2011.  We went from a team that went 2-14 and was devoid of talent except for a few veterans and improved to 6-10 after losing a bunch of close games. We had a rookie quarterback, a new system, and no off-season to practice.

in 2012 we did struggle when Chud went crazy with the read option and didn't allow Cam to actually run the offense.  When we returned to some sort of sanity we had a late season run.

Obviously 2013 needs no comment but this year does,  If we had paid Gross and Wharton (which is why they retired)  Mitchell and gotten a good corner in free agency, we would not have struggled even with Cams injuries and slow start.  I know that everyone blames Rivera but honestly every year the coaches have to start over teaching guys the basics because we end up starting projects, UDFAs and rookies in starting or at least contributing roles.  I bet there is a inverse relationship between number of wins and number of rookies you are starting..

Given the lack of personnel consistency among the players it is no surprise that our wins totals have also been inconsistent.

Serious question: are you aware of the salary cap?

I think that some of you who are OK with the coaching staff coming back need to take another look at that link.

We have beaten:

Detroit

Tampa X 2

Chicago

New Orleans

Seriously, look at that schedule, and our "wins" this year.

and every year rivera says it's a process and "we have young guys that needed to grow"

Yup.

Ever year, it's the same damn story.

RR can't compete with "good" teams.  I don't have time to do it, but I would be very curious what RR's record is against teams with a winning record.

It shocks me SO many are fine with the return of Ron Rivera. WOW memory is short.

Remember that 7 game stretch where we continued to get blown out and didnt even compete, including by the vikings? Remember both Falcons and Bengals when Ron opted to play it ultra safe insteand of going for the win, and we didn't win either game.

Remember when a meger 8-8 could have won us the divison two years in a row and now can't even get that?

It is only because our division is so rancid can we even win the south but we still are depending on other teams to lose just so we can maybe win it.

"Oh but wouldn't it be worth Ron sticking around if he leads us to the Super bowl!!!!!!!???!?!?!?!??"

Oh gee, ya sure that would be great. And tell me, how long are you wiling to wait for that to happen? At what point is enough enough? 4 years and 1 playoff? Blatant regression by the ENTIRE coaching staff (don't dare pin it all on Mike Shula). Wanna be like the Bungals, wait 10 years for nothing at all?

I've seen plenty already to know that Ron does not have the knowledge or ability to lead us to the Super Bowl.

    • Perfect example why Zod said they are getting rid of the Tinderbox. 😉 Segmenting which swallow has the best airspeed velocity is what divides us! Bravo Zod.
    • I've been reading around on different websites about our team and OTAs and minicamps.  There are several members of this team that need to step up.  These are a few of mine.  Please feel free to add to the iist. 1. Bryce Young, Obviously the No. 1 person who needs to step up.  Bryce has been given everything a QB could ask for.  We have a top tier offensive line. Big WRs that can get open and make plays.  A decent running game.   Over tha past couple of years we have really put enough players in position to help him.  He has to be the guy to step up and utitlize his players. 2. Jaelan Phillips, Just because of the massive contract we gave him.  He has to be the leader of the pass rush.  He has to be in double digit sacks or the money isn't worth it.  He has to bring Scourton and the rest of the group to the top. 3. Ejiro Evero, Two years ago he had the statically worst defense in NFL history but was given a reprieve because we focused primarily on the offensive side of the ball for Young.  Last year we improved and we just didn't have enough to stop elite QBs.  This year he has been given just about everything a defensive coordinator could ask for.  IMO he has 4 cornerbacks that have impressed this offseason.  He received solid help for Brown with Hunter and Phillips. Our weakest area, LB Corp, we signed Lloyd to solidify that group.  With all the tools he has this season he needs to show why we kept him after 2024.  IMO he has no excuses this season.   Lastly, IMO is X. Legette. He has shown sporadic flashes but nothing to justify being a first round pick.  The WR room is stacked this season and any number of players from that group could make the 53 man roster. XL is going to have to show out this preseason.  At minimum, he performs well enough to possibly get a trade to a team needing a WR.  I think with T-Mac, Coker and Brazzell in the mix for the top three position we would be wise to utilize the remaining WR spots for players with a larger ceiling than XL.  Training Camp and Preseason will sort them out and IMO if XL doesn't flat out show out he's done in Carolina.  Feel free to add to this list.  And of course, your opinion.
