So Cotchery is signed to a 5yr deal?

The party I was at the moment we saw that formation we all looked at each other like are you serious?

It fooled nobody and disguised nothing. Meanwhile no end arounds to Philly that has been working.

yeah cotchery jokes flew all day. most of us were pretty sure they drew it up just to get him out of the way. "hey jericho why don't you guard the base back here and make sure the bad guys stay out"

Cotchery is a very good number 3 receiver that was forced to play the #2 role in an offense without a legitimate deep threat.  IMO, he is similar to LaFell who was playing a spot that was not ideal to what he does best.  He's not a guy that you look for to be a playmaker, but someone that can move the chains as a 3rd option.  Put a legitimate #2 beside KB and you'll understand Cotchery's value.  Someone mentioned Proehl earlier, and I think that is a good comparison.  If you had put Proehl in as Muhammad's number 2 without Smitty, you would have seen similar production as we saw from Cotchery.  Both guys rely on savvy and understanding the nuances of the position to succeed.  Neither was particularly fast or athletic, but both knew how to get the job done.  The big difference with us is that we had no Smitty (please do not dredge up that argument again) to open up the defense and give Cotchery a gap to sit in and be a safety net.

As for that early "drop" he had, I actually put that more on Cam than Cotchery.  You don't throw a five yard laser at a guys head without there being a high chance of it being incomplete.  IMO, that's one of Cams biggest areas he needs to improve on.  He doesn't usually have good touch on his passes, particularly the shorter ones.  He tends to throw a lot of darts that makes it hard for the receiver to catch.

Cotchery was signed because the panthers needed a vet to the show the new rookies how to be a pro on/offfield. Rather than punch them, scream threaten them, and get upset when they don't have the most yards, targets, recs, tds.

That said, I would not miss him if he where cut. Truly him and avant where the same player, just one was signed for much more. Brown and kevin are the keepers, that leaves 3-6 spots open. I'm sure the cards are cutting ginn and his price should be low. So that would help ST and fill a WR spot too.

Cotch should take over Bersin's role as the WR4 and Carolina should just release Bersin.  Dude was a great story coming out of camp and filled in nicely earlier, but the potential fizzled as the year went on.  If he can be had for really cheap and doesn't mind being a 5/6 WR, then I'm good keeping him too, just don't think that's where he wants to be on the depth chart.

Cotchery coming back would be good beind Benji, Philly and whoever the #2 is that they get via FA or the draft.  He can step in for a week or three if there's injuries and can continue to help the young guys. As long as his salary and position on the depth chart doesn't get in the way of the top-3 WRs, I'm good.

Cotchery seems like an ideal slot guy, has sure hands (aside from the ball that he dropped early in the game), runs nice routes, etc.

What you guys need is a formidable #2 IMO.

Cotchery dropped multiple TD passes this year. Sure handed is not how I'd describe him. Idk if he and Cam never developed a good feel for each other but I was more confident at the end of the season with Philly on the field.

It's really a 2-year deal + 3 "dummy years" that only exist for the purpose of amortizing the cap hit over 5 years instead of 2. The contract is set to automatically void after next season.

The very fact we had to add voidable years to help us fit that small of a contract into our cap is quite telling.  Also they had to do the same thing with Harper.
