If all the time off for Hardy, Peterson, Rice, etc. is not considered punishment by the league, why ever suspend anyone. The only true punishment through that logic is fine the crap out of them.

It's not about punishment for the players. It's about the league taking a stance to remove players who do not abide by the law from the public eye. In other words, it's a PR move, nothing more, nothing less.

Its not a punishment. These guys all got a year off work from a physically grueling job. In Hardy's case he got paid to rest and recuperate. There is no telling how many years this time off has added to their careers.

They are all going to be fresh and ready to go for their new teams next year.

I see the exempt list as a suspension with pay in order to give the league time to sort out the facts. It's purgatory. It's the time before punishment or exoneration.
