Expansion draft 20 years ago today...

Panthers/Jaguars expansion draft occurred 20 years ago today.

Here's how it went down: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1995_NFL_expansion_draft

Here's a link to an article from the NY times discussing how it went down at the time and contrasting each team's approach:

Jacksonville began the National Football League's expansion draft with a flourish yesterday, selecting the veteran quarterback Steve Beuerlein with the first pick. The Jaguars then ended the draft with a bang by selecting five consecutive players who will earn $1 million or more in 1995.

That group includes a threesome of disappointing first-round draft picks -- Giants' tight end Derek Brown, Washington receiver Desmond Howard and Patriots' guard Eugene Chung.

In between, Jacksonville and the Carolina Panthers, the other expansion team, selected players who came cheap during the N.F.L.'s first expansion draft in 19 years. The big names on the list for Carolina were Steelers' cornerback Tim McKyer, Cleveland receiver Mark Carrier and the Jets' backup quarterback Jack Trudeau.

Jacksonville and Carolina took different tacks, and only time will tell which was better. The Jaguars appear to have the better roster, but the Panthers will have more money to work with during the free agency period, which begins tomorrow.

The Panthers, who selected 35 players, will pay more than $9 million on their salaries and picked mainly younger players. Carrier was the only player they selected who will make $1 million next season.

The Jaguars, by contrast, took 31 players and spent a bit more than $15 million in selecting Beuerlein, who will earn $2 million in 1995; Brown; Howard; Chung; New Orleans linebacker James Williams, and Packers' running back Reggie Cobb, who will make about $1 million each next season. Those six players will account for nearly half of the $15 million.

    • Woods has had 600 yards in 2 years with Stroud. He's done. Collins blew up with Stroud and had a ton more everything in Stroud’s rookie year than he did in his first two years combined. Mingo sucks but his rookie season was about the same as Collins. The Texans won 10 games with rookie Stroud. They won 11 total games in the 3 years prior. They had a poo roster before the 2023 draft. The Panthers had a better team before the 2023 draft. That was my point that Stroud (and Anderson) jumped the Texans to another level. No one thought of Nico Collins as a stud before Stroud. They were one of the worst teams in the league from 2020-2022. We won 6 more games over the same time period.
    • 1 here. I don't think we are very good. Maybe we can be entertaining though. Anyway, I would rather be pleasantly surprised with a couple of wins, rather than being angry and annoyed every Sunday because the team is just flat out terrible.
    • Going all the way to something like the Dollar General Bowl.
