Interpreting the Combine Press Conferences

Here are a few things I think I think about what the Gettleman and Rivera NFL combine press conferences tell us.

1. Gettleman will pull the trigger early on a defensive lineman. I think it is a lock that somewhere in rounds 1-3 a defensive end or tackle will probably be taken. Gettleman just can't help himself from glowing when talking defensive line.

2. Wide Receiver in round 1 is a real possibility. Rivera's talk of getting Cam weapons rang true as he went on to describe how another offensive weapon would have helped in Seattle. It is on their minds.

3. Cam is the man. There is no indication at all that the Panthers are thinking of making any contingency plans on Cam Newton and his contract status.

4. Both mentioned how deep offensive line was in this draft. Even if the panthers do go offensive tackle in round one, don't be shocked if they double dip like the defensive tackle position a couple years back.

Looking at the crop, this may sound crazy but a multi-tech DT may be in play more than a 4-3 DE in R1, although that kid from UCLA is interesting.  In R2 and 3 you've got the likes of Preston and Za'darius Smith.  Those two are strong possibilities I'd take note of.

It definitely seemed they want a guy that can get downfield fast so the likes of Agholor, Dorsey, Lockett, and Kenny Bell (sleeper) could be targets.

You say WR in round 1 is a real possibility. Do you think one of the FA WRs is a real possibility? Not Dez or Thomas (if theyhit FA) or Cobb, but Torry or Maclin or Crabtree?

It definitely depends on the money that they are asking for. I could see Crabtree or Maclin if they aren't too expensive.

Really hoping Orchard or Hunter has an Ealy type drop.

Would be nice though to pick up a UT pass rushing specialist that can play off the edge, a slightly more athletic version of KK

Some say Cobb wants 9 million a year which is a no in our favor. If he is looking between 5 or 6 then maybe. I think Cam would love to have Cobb too. They work out in the offseason and seem real close friends.

He is the one player that addresses two needs! His value to us is larger than most other teams.

Don't get hung up on yearly salary numbers, at the end of the day it's about guaranteed money. Gman can make the deal if its worth the commitment

I would really hope so but Cobb said directly he wants $9M/year and guarenteed aside, that is Tiffany's money. And DG said he ain't spending Tiffany's money this year. I would love Cobb here so much but I bet he'll get overpaid.

    • Reasonable. I mean I didn’t see a clear path to relief this season myself. As I have typed already, I think the QB FA class is more interesting next season and that draft is supposed to be stacked as well. There just weren’t many options this year.  When you have Tepper to contend with you have to tread lightly around this unless you are 100% certain and willIng to stake your job on it.   There were a couple of outings that helped Bryce a lot in terms of  thinking maybe he can do this, and if you are a supporter you are giving them a lot of weight. You are likely to think just get him some more help and he can do that every week. Which I think Tepper falls into that category.  And the playoffs, division champs, regardless of the way I see that, the supporters will also give that a lot of weight.    And the big one, the atmosphere In BOA for that WC game, Tepper had to be soiling himself over that. If you pulled Bryce out right now you had better be right and your new guy had better make the playoffs and look good doing it or you will be gone and your chance to build your old team back into respectability will be gone too.  So here we have Pickett on a one year deal, and Grier and King. I understand it.
    • Well, seeing as we play the Lions at home this year, pretty sure that rumor isn't true.
