Cam Newton should be paid more than Luck or Wilson

Well stated.

There are a lot of folks here who seem to want to make Cam the highest paid player in the NFL to validate him.  To those folks I say, "Remember the good ole days when Marty Hurney was here?"  These are the same people who have been saying that Cam has no protection and no weapons.  Pay the man too much, and that trend will continue.

I have been saying for months, Gettlemen is not emotionally attached to Cam.  He can keep him for 2 more years if he wants, and he might do that while he finds and develops another qb.  Imagine if he traded Cam to Cleveland for their 2 #1 draft picks?  We would have 3 first rounders and $20 m to use in free agency.  Anderson was undefeated last year....

I doubt that happens, but if Cam is not committed to Carolina, if getting overpaid here is not enough for him, then maybe Gettlemen explores ways to turn a negative into a positive.  Yes, this site would explode, but they are not in Gettlemen's shoes, having to make football decisions that benefit the long-term development of the franchise.

Where are they?

I wouldn't put him with Hurney lol. Aside from that trade, he seems to have done okay for the most part. If the only other blunder you can come up with is Hakeem Nicks on a one year deal for 3 million and 500 yards/5 TD's, you may be reaching just a bit.

It's not.

Seen Bjorn Werner lately?

Ahmad Bradshaw's durable enough to rely on, right?

Receivers and runningbacks dropping balls? Not here.

Defense that couldn't stop a high school team? No problem. We can always outscore them...well, mostly.

(and this with a defensive head coach)

The Colts spent a decade with the best quarterback in the game and a so-so team around him. To his credit, Polian got them a Super Bowl, but in the meantime they spent a lot of years getting owned by a team with a lower paid QB but a better overall roster.

Now? Different quarterback, same approach. Eexcept I don't think Grigson is as good an evaluator as Polian (and I'm not that big a fan of Polian).

What game where you watching Wilson had 3 touchdowns and 0 picks while Newton threw 2 touchdowns and had 2 picks including a pick 6. Newtons passer rating was 79 and Wilsons was double that at 149. These kind of apologist comments are part of the reason Cam gets some of the criticism on this board.

The NFC Championship Game, obviously.  Wilson threw 4 interceptions, and a fumble as well IIRC.

By halftime he had more interceptions than he did completions.

The point he's making is Russell can have those type of games and still be fine.  Lord knows how bad we get blown out if Cam throws 4 INTs in a game like the NFCCG.

Two things for me.

1. the guaranteed money this will be the biggest factor if I like the deal or not. Kap's guaranteed money is only 11.7%  Daltons is 17.7% do I expect Cam to take something in that range no.  But as a mobile QB he cant expect 50% guaranteed money either.  If it is more than 30% I will have a problem with the contract.

2. Average per year.  People that are throwing out 25 mil per year that wont happen.  Aaron Rodgers average per year is 22 million and he is the highest of all QB's. Which was signed in 2013.  Kaps is 19 mil but he has de-escalators which Cam would be stupid to allow.  Daltons is 16 million. I have no issues with Cam getting close to 20 million a year but anything over that would hurt the club and also would be over paying him.

Now Luck might get 22 million a year and if so good for him.  Wilson on the other hand will not exceed 20 million.  Cam's mobility is great is also a factor in his contract negotiations.  Cam is entering his prime at 25/ 26 in May and a 6 year contract will lock him up until he is 32.  that is 2 years past the 30 year make and his mobility will be declining by then.  For the past couple years Cam has had injuries that has made him miss games and effected his performance.  Yes a better oline will help that but only to a point he will still run and still take hits.

So a 20 million average with 30% guarantee is best for both and if Cam wants more than that I have no issue letting him walk.  He only has a 5 year window left at his current ability.

Cam Newton should be paid more than Luck or Wilson.

If you ask yourself what percentage of the overall offensive success is each QB responsible for, Cam Newton comes out well above Andrew Luck or Russell Wilson. Cam Newton and his legs are the main reason the Panthers offense had any success at all last season. If not for his ability to stay alive with his physical talents when linemen and linebackers are chasing him, the Panthers would have been ranked dead last in the league.

In other words, Cam Newton is a huge band-aid holding together an inept offense. Partly due to lack of weapons, partly due to a below average coordinator, the Panthers offense was more of a hindrance than a help in the playoff race. Whatever the reasons for the bad offense, Cam Newton made sure it was at least competitive.

I'm not saying Cam Newton will get more money. I'm not saying the Panthers will pay more money.

I'm saying if you look at the situation objectively, Cam and his agent have a serious argument for more.

This is spot on, Jeremy.  Now, what percentage more would you say he would be worth?

Aye, it is about the guaranteed dollars.

Kap and Dalton moving forward ares still big question marks to me.

I think Cam is more of a sure bet along the lines of Joe Flacco.

Flacco got more guaranteed:

3/1/2013: Signed a six-year, $120.6 million contract. The deal contains $52 million guaranteed, including a $29 million signing bonus. 2015: $4 million (+ $7 million option bonus), 2016: $18 million, 2017: $20.6 million, 2018: $20 million, 2019: Free Agent

Too much?

Don't know if I completely agree with the thread title, but I do think Both Cam and Luck are more "valuable" to their respective franchises. If they get paid more because of that then so be it. Wilson's leverage is getting to and winning a Super Bowl. So effectively, Wilson will get paid more on past production while Cam and Luck will cash in on a little past performance and a lot of future potential (which, by the way, I am all for).

Bottom line: they all deserve what's coming to them.

Not at all I would be happy with a Flacco type deal.

I agree on the notion that Cam is more valuable and integral to our offense than Wilson from a casual glance. I have a hard time saying he is more important than Luck is to the Colts.

Selfquote

And I say this with knowing we need to pay him and he is our franchise qb.

I'm not very familiar with Werner, but he plays defense, and my entire point was speaking to the offensive side of the ball.

Edit: Ahmad Bradshaw reworked his deal for less than 900k, he's gone this year anyway. The Colts did have some dropped passes last year, but they still had a number of weapons and put up a lot of yards. Hilton is one of the league's best WR's.

I still say the Colts tanked the crap out of that season with Curtis Painter. They knew their only chance was Andrew Luck.

Like we did in 2010.
