Time to Get Rid of NFL Compensatory Selections

Just when we seem to be getting on board with the system, of course, someone wants to go ahead and change it. But the author has a realistic disclaimer:

"This article is intended to encourage discussion of the process without regard to the feasibility of actually pushing through a change. I acknowledge that the NFL and NFLPA have negotiated the matter of compensatory selections so it would not be easy to change. Feasibility will be discussed in the course of the article."

The proposal comes basically down to altering the cap for teams that have a net loss through FA losses as opposed to awarding picks that he points out generally do not replace the value of the FA loss, using the past 20 years of stats.

"I would argue that a superior option, and one that does a better job of contributing to league parity, is to adjust a team’s cap through a “luxury tax” based on free agent signings."..."For each player signed or lost, the contract amount would be multiplied by a percentage (say 17.5%, which is the Major League Baseball luxury tax rate) and the resulting product would be transferred from one team’s next annual cap number to another team."

I'm not sure it would be better. I haven't thought it through or taken the time to understand it but I thought the Huddle would certainly bring a good discussion.

I don't want to mess with the cap, at all. That alone evens up the league.

I believe there needs to be more at least one more round, maybe 2. 1-9 would offer more trades, which gives the media more to talk about. Not that long ago there where around 14 rounds, team fight over top UDFas. So that means there's value, plenty of times a team will have a few mid round graded players that go undrafted.

The value gap between what you lose and what you get awarded gets really noticeable when you lose a guy with real talent. In 2011, the year after we lost Peppers, we were awarded a pick at the end of the third. Guess what, we ended up getting Sione Fua. Somebody explain to me how that's compensatory.

In all fairness, Fua wasn't forced on us.  That pick was due to the generally incredible ineptitude of the former GM in the draft after the 1st round.  I'd be willing to bet dollars to donuts that Fua would have never been a Panther if Gettleman had been running that draft.

Well we could've taken Jordan Cameron, Julius Thomas, or Richard Sherman there; so we had the opportunity.

The odds of taking those three players considering the pool of talent that they were in just goes to show how meager the compensation was.

Even right now that we've got who is, in my opinion, one of the best talent evaluators in the league, there is still a minuscule chance of acquiring replacement production when you're using an awarded 3rd round compensatory that you were given because an elite starter left town

Compensatory selections are ridiculous. Example:

Michael Johnson signs huge deal with Tampa last offseason. Bengals net a 3rd round pick for it. Johnson is trash, released, and is back on the Bengals roster.

It hurts me to agree with an Aints fan, but yeah that's kind of bogus.
