With the Carolina Panthers owning a total of three picks now in the fifth round of the NFL draft, I figured round five deserves its own mock draft.

We know the Panthers can  trade only one of these picks, and after last year's draft trade that is very possible. However, for purposes of this mock I will assume the Panthers keep all three.

Here are three players I feel would be among the best players available and also fill a need.

Justin Hardy - WR - East Carolina

5'10 192lbs

Hardy isn't a top receiver in this draft due to his less than stellar measurables, but if we know one thing about Dave Gettleman's drafting it is that he doesn't give a hoot about measurables. Gettleman was able to find gems like Benwikere and Boston last year in the mid rounds because of their slow 40 times.

What Hardy can do is run block, run crisp routes, and catch the ball. In short, Hardy is a real football player, which has been common theme in my mocks this season. He has one of the lowest drop percentages in the draft this season, possibly due to his ginormous mits.

Austin Sheperd - OT/OG - Alabama

6'4 315lbs

I really like this kid the more I look at him, and its not just his beard....

By now you know what I look for in offensive linemen. Big mean guys from legit football programs. Well, Sheperd fits that bill nicely.

He isn't a prototype physical specimen, but I don't care. He makes up for it  in instincts, timing, and technique. Some have him listed as a tackle but I see him as a solid guard at first. His arms may not be long enough to be a tackle in the NFL. He started every game for Bama at right tackle in 2014, so I am guessing he could be used there in an emergency for the Panthers.

Sheperd would immediately give Chris Scott and Amini Silatolu a run for their money at backup guard. Not bad for a late 5th rounder.

(#79)

Ladarius Gunter - CB - Miami (FL)

6'1 202lbs

Big physical corner that teams are coveting now. Gunter gets a lot of comparisons to Josh Norman. Has good size and overall athletic ability. Practices well. Has gotten lost at times in coverages, just as Norman did early in his career. In the late fifth round, this kid would be worth the investment as a future project.

Did well at the senior bowl, showed he is teachable. That may have raised his stock from the 6th or 7th rounds to the 5th.

Also, has special teams experience. Could replace Josh Norman on the Panther special teams now that Norman is a starting CB.

Yes.

Every year no one thinks any receivers will fall below the third round. Every year they do.

Agreed. Receivers will fall into the later rounds because of how deep the draft is at the position... I just hope it's Hardy that falls. I wouldn't be upset if we took the guy in the 4th though.

Finally someone else sees that Hardy is not a 2nd or 3rd rounder. Damn ECU homers!

I'm a homer that is for sure but I understand that J Hardy has been overlooked and will be again. I think he will drop and fly under the radar. Hopefully the Panthers will get lucky and can grab him at a discount!

Erik Highsmith and J Hardy were an awesome dou at West Craven.

People think he is a second rounder?

Good lord.

I have seen projected high as the third round but not second round. If his 40 at the combine was a 4.4 then yes but a 4.56 nah, I can see him end up being selected in the fourth round realistically.

    • Another layer to that is Ive seen Seattle has been in the market for CB help this off-season.   Michael had a higher PFF grade than Horn who got 15 games this season. He wants to be here too, that's a huge bonus for any 5 win team that had awful pass rush.  The 7th rounder Michael Barrett didn't last long on Seattle, he was cut before the season I think and ended up on browns PS. He's already been on 5.......5 teams within one year.......
    • You have gave the board some recent gold via posting. Heres my poor attempt at the truthful play-by-play of the time during post- I pulled out the old laptop to do my shitposting and check on websites. Open the huddle and see this new thread. Open thread and read CRAs post, {inner thinking, oooOOooo this is my lane and I got this}. Make sure not to scroll even to the 2nd post. 23% of current neurons still firing start up and two names appear- Captain and Josh....... about another 43 seconds past "O GOD" it's July 4th weekend and I got medicine to pick up. (If the laptop didn't give away my aging, the meds should...) I need to split, think long panther careers and the hint-  Ryan Kalil was a late 2nd and Pro bowls(even all-pros too) he's got to be OLman and Mikie Minter is among the all-time Panthers career leaders. Drop my post. Scramble to get keys, wallet, and phone. Check my phone- its 17% battery.....fug I now have to raw dog the pickup line and put the phone on charge.... Flip flops, sweat ringed filled hat, and shades acquired. Get in my pos rav4 and think about not running the A/C. Pull out the drive way and reach the 1st stop light, A/C is wide open. I check my shirt to see if there's any new stains on my house shirt, bush off the Bojangles salt that I see.... Neurons re-fire and focus on the comments CRA made that no one would get this....... Dang IT, that means it isn't Ryan Kalil or Mike Minter! CVS is close, but I know its impossible I get back withing 10 minutes to change my post and my phone is on the charger. {Think you monkey, at one point you were a draft nerd}. Reach the CVS line, by some grace its not 5 cars deep during 5 o'clock traffic hell. Im second in line after the car in front of me both turn in, they have to go back and forth to line up while Im a pro for that geometry. Neurons finally reach peak performance as Ive re-thought draft classes. Think obscure and unknown 7th rounders with long careers. Some Sunday/Monday night member berry fell out of my Melon, Will montgomery during the players intros for washington. I thought he out of the league and was shocked to see him still playing around the 2015 years. I do a goggle background check and that refreshed memory. Pick up the meds and enjoy the sweet smelling cool CVS air. Driving back and check in on one of the local bums at the big stop light, wow he's got a new fancy rug. Think about all the old food I got and need to start giving it away and rethink it. Reach home and post a follow up and I know Minter is wrong too, I check the draft history and see Robert Mcclain. Too late, but that would have been my guess....open CRAs link and get "upset" at the DBs name.
    • THANKS my guy! Keeping up with this threads theme, if I view a thread and there's only 20 posts and some time passes. If I see there's one new post and read the name; @Dave Gettleman's Shortsis among the chosen few that I will reopen that thread just to see what you posted.    Thanks again, plus not just a scout, thats scotty mccloughans son?!?!? If not for the deep claws of booze, scotty is among the best talent finders this league has recently had. Last I heard he ran a consulting business. Caden could be one of those who's on a early path to being a GM in the future. I was a big fan of his dad, dam shame about booze demon ruining his career.
