General Draft Prospect Talk

Bits and pieces from around the league...

PFT reporting that DE Randy Gregory, who weighed only 235 at the combine, showed up for an individual team workout now weighing under 230.

I'm guessing he's shooting for a fit on the outside in a 3-4?

You'd think he'd have to be.

A sub 230 DE would be ridiculous.

A sub 230 3-4 OLB is also ridiculous. He's a huge bust waiting to happen. At a time when he's supposed to be gaining weight, he lost 10 lbs since he was at 238 at his pro day

Plus the drug concerns.

He honestly seems like kind of a flake.

Yike.  Sub-230 or a pass rusher?  You can get away with that in college, but in the NFL?  Most of the top pass rushers last year in the NFL were 260+.  In fact, there wasn't a single double digit sack guy last year who is listed at a playing weight lighter than 250.  You have to get all the way down to #41 on the sack list to find a guy sub-250 and that's Seattle's Bruce Irvin who's still listed at 248.

I just don't know where a 230ish pound pass rushing specialist fits in the NFL.  This guy may be in for an all out free fall in the draft.

Bad news for Boise St RB Jay Ajayi. Reports his med re-check at the combine on his knee did not go well. He injured it in 2011 and can play immediately but there are serious concerns about the long term durability of it and that he may have an abbreviated career. Several teams red flagged him and likely took him off the board. Probably drops him from 2nd-3rd round range to 5th-undrafted range.

it would be a steal getting him in the 5th

Reminds me of another guy whose name escapes me.

He was drafted by the Colts the same year we picked DeAngelo Williams. As I recall, some folks thought that we should have drafted him instead.

Turned out we made the right choice. I don't think he lasted very long in the league.

Remind me, who am I thinking of?

Addai? Did he have medical red flags coming out or are you just comparing the names?

    • You should because before the preseason fiasco and the start of the season fiasco, all the reports, including Frank’s responses, were that Fitterer and Reich were in lock step. Remember the press conference where Fitterer talked about both he and Frank saying who they wanted before and after the draft process and that they both picked Young and it was glorious? People got hung up on Tepper saying the point guard analogy in April when Brown was interviewed by a Panthers reporter describing how a QB needs to be a point guard in huge detail. That was in February. I think Tepper was just parroting Brown to make himself look like he knew what he was doing. Mrs. Tepper hugging Bryce always overshadowed CJ saying how he called her Mama Tepp. We fuged up as a team, probably more so because Fitterer always said he had Young as his #1 the year before, probably because we looked at all the QBs that year as well. Reich’s love for CJ started when he got on the hot seats for frankly doing a horrific job. He's been in the league a long time and has a lot of media friends and that was a face saving CYA which we know well with many years of Hurney. Still amazing to think how much better the team was under Rhule/Hurney before Fitterer got any control when Rhule was on the hot seat.
    • I loved jStew but let’s not forget he was almost always held out from practice  due to some nagging injuries
