Since my car died a week ago I'm looking for something very cheap to get me to and from work. I drive 30 miles one way M - F so gas is a consideration.

Given my meager budget it'll have to be something older and my wife has a friend who is selling a '99 Civic LX 5 speed with 165k miles in good condition . She is asking for 2200.00 which I have already been approved for at the SECU.

I was hoping to keep it under 2k so that I could include the tax, tag, title, oil change, etc within the 2200. She says she can't go lower than 2200.

Thoughts on whether or not A. This car will last 2 years or more and if B. Y'all think 2200 is a fair price.

Take it to a reputable shop and get a diagnostic done. All it takes is the computer plugin and a few bucks.

Buy it.

Change the oil, make sure it doesn't overheat and it will do 300k easy.

 

In the SoCal market that is a good price.

As long as the timing belt has been taken care of that thing has a lot of life in it.  I have a 2000 with 160k on it.  Considering getting something larger just don't want the payment.  2200 sounds fair.  Get a mechanic to check it out.

If the engine is in decent shape, no issues with clutch and transmission, and the brakes seem OK, that's a great buy.

 

 

I wouldn't hesitate.  Those cars last forever.

 

 

I have an Acura TL daily driver (too many miles on the Yukon) and I have 165k on it now, wouldn't surprise me to see that amount double for this car.

my wife sold her 99 lx ex with similar mileage for $1k more than that earlier this year.  granted her's was an automatic but that still seems like a good buy to me.

 

and to echo others if it was properly maintained and everything checks out you should get two or more years out of it without breaking a sweat.

For the mileage and depending on the condition of the vehicle, that price certainly seems reasonable.

 

Based on your commute you mentioned, that's under 15k miles a year. Those cars can go 300k miles. I would expect you should be able to get 2-3 years out of it.

I had an 88 Accord that would not quit, ended up giving it to my ex brother in law when I got a company car since I thought it was on it's last legs, 250k miles etc - he ended up driving it for 4 more years....and sold it to someone else. It was really well maintained though.
