Top 10 Backup QBs in the NFL

Here are the NFL’s top 10 backups entering training camps:
1. Derek Anderson, Carolina Panthers: Nearly a decade ago, Anderson was a Pro Bowler in Cleveland. He’s rarely been needed during his four-year stint in Carolina, but when Cam Newton wasn’t available in 2014, Anderson went 2-0 while completing 67.0 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 116.8. Can’t ask for much more out of your backup, and Anderson is still only 31 years old.

2. Mark Sanchez, Philadelphia Eagles: Sanchez performed surprisingly well in short spurts behind Nick Foles last season before eventually falling off a cliff. But if you only need him for a game or two at a time, the extremely talented former top-five pick really does have the ability to step in and win games. He was 4-4 with an 88.4 passer rating with Philly in 2014.

3. Matt Hasselbeck, Indianapolis Colts: The league’s oldest position player, Hasselbeck is no longer the Pro Bowl-caliber quarterback he used to be, but he’s the definition of reliable. The 39-year-old had a 102.6 passer rating on 44 passes when needed in 2014, which is all you can

People laughed at me when I said other teams may court Anderson for a starting role. He is better than a handful of starters in this league easily.

I think several teams would like to have Anderson as a starter, but only on a cheap 1-2 year deal. And I don't think he'd leave Carolina for that. Unless a team offers him a 3+ year deal with a decent pay raise over what he's getting now I think he's content. He likes Charlotte and has a very good relationship with Cam. He gets paid to hold a clipboard, and he knows he has a chance to ride Cam's cape to a SB ring.

I can't really argue with that.

But there obviously is a huge difference between looking at a small sample size like a few games versus a full season where defenses begin to gather tape on you.

For example, look at Josh McCown in those games with Chicago versus becoming a full time starter in Tampa Bay.

Exactly. DA would fold easier than a cheap suit if he had to play more games. We forget he was an INT away from losing us the first Bucs game

    • fans view “box safety” with the same disdain they have when they hear “game manager” QB.   but there’s a reason most 1st round safeties are “box safeties”-it’s a much longer list of requisite skills to be a good box safety than it is to be a guy whose only real responsibility is to not get beat over the top. Fans crave the ed reed type and as someone who has never been able to enjoy this franchise having a guy like that, I get the enthusiasm-but I’m not really prepared to spend a first round pick on a free safety. If it happens it’ll be fun, it’ll address a need with a good player and that’s well and good. But those guys end up walking after their first contract because their pedigree usually outpaces what their teams feel like they’re adding to their overall win total.
    • Its criminal that the upcoming season is mainly in the tiny hands of BY.  I still member the time I did a full turn, if you member his first off-season from that Panthers all-time worst team....... Answering questions at his first presser, he goes along the lines " I didn't do nothing, no weight room or throwing" " I needed to get away". I was fully out with him, the guy didn't even try to improve his football mind, body, strength, in the biggest joke of panther football. I could not believe it, what a leader or dare say "point guard"(lols @ NBA point guards as a ref)
    • I view FS almost as the NT of the secondary. Oftentimes the true measure of his impact isn't necessarily in the plays that he makes but what he allows you to do with the rest of your defense to allow them to make plays. When you have that elite true sideline to sideline FS safety blanket over the top of the defense it allows you to be a lot more aggressive with everyone else. Where as when you have a Nick Scott as your last line of defense you gotta be mindful to not have to rely too heavily on that.
