Missing playoffs at 11-5

There is an article up on Yahoo now about how the Patriots could actually miss the playoffs with an 11-5 record, and that no team has done that since the 1985 Denver Broncos. I have been under the impression all last week and this week that we, too, could go 11-5 and miss the playoffs, but we are not mentioned in the article.

Then, for sh*ts and giggles, I checked NFL.com, and they show us as having clinched a playoff spot in their standings (denoted by the -x).

What did I miss? I thought we needed an ATL or DAL loss last Sunday in addition to our win? We got neither. Have we really clinched a playoff spot, regardless of our last two games?

Atlanta, Dallas, and Tampa Bay have to win the rest of their games and the Panthers lose their last 2 games to miss the playoffs. I find this pretty unlikely.

I also saw stats of us with the second place in the AFC playoff picture today as well.

The Panthers have NOT clinche a playoff spot. If the Panthers lose their last two, and Atlanta, the Bucs, and Cowboys win their last two then the Panthers are out. Just one lose by either of those three teams then the Panthers are at least in as a wildcard.

I think the best records from 8 NFC teams and 8 AFC teams should be in the playoffs. That way a team wont get in with a worse record than another simply cause theyre the division leader.

Oh, okay. That threw me off because all other teams with an indicator have truly clinched. Also, the playoff bracket at the bottom is definitely based on "if the season ended today" but clinching should only be shown if it has happened. Hell, at least the Yahoo article is wrong - I get some vindication! However, I wish we were already in.
