The Reason we didnt trade with Boston

My friend works at an intern for the hornets, and is close with some of guys that really know what happened. So here it is. Early in the day – Boston and Charlotte had agreed on a trade –

Charlotte gets-

Jared Sullinger (But we really wanted Smart)

16th

28th

And future 1st rounder uprotected

Boston gets-

9th pick overall

The Boston reneged and started trying to do other deals and never made this one official. So when everything they tried after reneging on us

So then they tried to trade with every other team up until our pick. Then they made last ditch effort and didn’t want to include Sullinger anymore, which was a sticking point for them.

The last ditch effort was

16th

28th

1 unprotected 1st

1 protected 1st

2 2nd round picks

But we wanted either Sullinger or smart and Celtics just wanted to get rid of all their picks. So we passed on the trade.

They broke this down on the radio this morning and it made sense.

Sullinger following the Hornets that afternoon was no coincidence, and our backing out at the last minute is why Ainge decided to direct his anger our way in his press conference instead of all the other teams to which he allegedly offered the deal.

If a trade was agreed upon to the point the Celtics told Sullinger he was headed this way that afternoon, there's only one way that was pulled back later in the evening: Michael Jordan is back in the GM driver's seat.

Ainge has been desperately trying to save face after all this.

We weren't the only team to decline their "offer", they tried to get the Knicks to bite too.

I don't blame us for staying at 9.

If there is anyone who should feel embarrassed about this, it's the Celtics.

As a Celtics fan, I can attest to the fact that no one is really happy with Ainge at all. He should have gotten rid of Sully, considering we drafted Jordan Mickey from LSU, a very similar player. We also got Rozier, a defensive, poor-shooting PG, aka another Marcus Smart.

    • Gronk is the best TE of all time, but he also played with Brady. Clarke was great, but had Peyton and in an era TE's didn't make crazy money. Kittle is great, but the two times he's made the SB, he was still on his rookie contract for one, and the other the 49ers had Purdy on a cheap rookie deal which help them build the rest of the roster. So again, it's not about not wanting an elite TE, of course it would be nice.  But realistically, in today's NFL, unless that elite TE with a top end TE salary is on a team with a GOAT level QB and/or other serious cap savings (i.e. key players on rookie deals), then I think it's not a good use of cap space.
    • This place was the poo pre tepper with tons of hilarious posters like phillyB. Joined in the 2000s during the 07 season and have been here bitching about this team since. but yeah its sadly been dying a slow death, every time I come to this site I am surprised its still up. I think the 2015 season was the absolute peak, the Panthers and this board especially just haven't "felt" the same since then. Igo should really sell the board since he clearly doesn't care anymore. Also, Reddit blows and the Bryce defenders on there need Jesus.
    • Guessing the price is too rich here given the injury history.  2024 was brutal and production dropped off in 2025 with a few more injuries (albeit rough qb play).    Don’t really understand the narrative that Young can’t benefit from talented upgrades on offense. Especially here with respect to a tight end. Any QB will benefit from talented receivers that threaten the top of coverage and tight ends with skills to stress zone.    The age and injury history, coupled with what he’s likely asking, just probably means we can better spend that money elsewhere.
