How the Panthers spend: Linebackers

Analysis: Extending the deal of Thomas Davis to lower his 2015 cap number from $9.9 million to $5.9 million was important in several ways. Not only did it assure the 32-year-old Davis will be with the team at least through 2017, it freed up more money to give middle linebacker Luke Kuechly a long-term extension. The Panthers already have exercised the fifth-year option on the 2013 Defensive Player of the Year, meaning his cap number will jump to just over $11 million in 2016. But the goal is to sign Kuechly to a long-term deal before it gets to that point. The Panthers showed how important they believe the linebacker position is to the defense by selecting Shaq Thompson in the first round.

Putting Thompson at weakside linebacker beside Kuechly and Davis could elevate this to the best group in the league.

Elevate my ass, Luke and TD are already the best LB group in the league with just the two of them.

Could.be in the running for best lb trio in the league if Shaq lives up to the hype.

Because of Davis and Kuechly, we could be in the running for best trio with you or I out there. If Shaq plays well, we will have the most dominating LB corp by far
