Moving away from the read-option

Observer: Panthers won't use read-option to make up for Benjamin

You can cross “more read-option plays” off your list of things the Carolina Panthers may try in their offense following the loss of Kelvin Benjamin.

Wednesday after practice, coach Ron Rivera shot down the idea of the team reverting back to read option that was so heavy in Carolina’s 2011 and 2012 offenses.

The Panthers have tried to make Cam Newton more of a pocket passer and don’t want to regress just because of the loss of a receiver, albeit their top receiver in Benjamin.

Also, with Newton’s $103.8 million contract extension, Carolina doesn’t want Newton running as much as he did in his first two seasons in the NFL.

“I don’t think we’re going to do any more than we’ve done in the past,” Rivera said.

Makes sense...

we probably will line up in boring power run sets and do little in them like them on our way to a 2-5 start.  Then they abandon it and let Cam be Cam running heavier shotgun and zone read looks late in the year (lots of no huddle) and we have our standard late surge...

First team offense is averaging about 2.8 yards per carry by RBs this preseason to date.

a number greatly inflated by one 29 yard run.  Literally every other time is 1 yard or negative almost.  Not sure how coaches can be confident yet....hope we see something Friday.

OL may be doing well pass blocking but that isn't what they will be asked of....not sure we can be confident we can run without Cam helping create lanes by the zone read

That is how it has always gone in the past.

The quote was we that we won't do more than in the past which could be equal to 2011 and 2012 yet the thread title is "moving away from read option".

Actually, the quote is that they won't be using it like they did in 2011 and 2012.

The Panthers had already started moving away from it in 2013 and 14, choosing instead to "make Cam Newton more of a pocket passer".  The team will continue that trend this season rather than "regressing" back to the read-option.

And frankly, I'm happy to hear it.

you think we can run traditionally with under center in Shula's power scheme?  With any type of consistency?

28 and Cam work that zone read well...the rookie should mesh well to.  Biggest issue with zone read IMO is using guys who are weak at it.  Was always odd watching 34 and Cam run it...body language was off.  34 didn't run inside well and often wouldn't release ball

If the OL is better - which I believe it is - and the backfield is better - which I believe it is minus Williams / plus a healthy Stewart and the new additions - then I believe a traditional Coryell style power run attack can work.

Mind you, don't take that to mean I have confidence in Shula, but I much prefer the scheme.

Thank God, we were using way too much. It was more like the Fail Option.

Only when using RBs who didn't fit the zone read.  Can't just use any decent RB.  Zone read isn't as simple as some make it.  Need that tough runner inside to make it work....

it it also isn't just running but passing from those looks.

    • Just another 1st round QB that never paid off for the team that drafted them or traded for them. It's been like this since the SB began. 36 QBs have now won the SB & only 13 of them have been 1st rounders winning with their original team. Namath 1968, Griese 1972, Bradshaw 1974, McMahon 1985, Simms 1986, Aikman 1992, Elway 1997, Roethlisberger 2005, P.Manning 2006, E.Manning 2007, Rodgers 2010, Flacco 2012, & Mahomes 2019. Only 3 have taken longer than 5 seasons as the starter to win a SB.  4  6  5  4  6  4  15  2  9  4  3  5  2 [the years it takes for these 1st round QBs] 5  1  4  1  3  1  1  2  3  4  [10 of the 36 have won a chip with their 1st team that haven't been drafted in the 1st round. These are the years it took them as a starter] What stands out? Only 2 of these QBs have lost their first championship appearance. Elway took 4 years as a 1st rounder & Hurts took 2 years as a 2nd rounder. Of the 10 non-1st round QBs, 2 are 2nd rounders, 3 are 3rd rounders, 5 are 6th rounders or later. Please stop wasting time on drafting 1st round QBs with such a high failure rate. The remaining 13 QBs are traded or free agent signings. Stafford, Favre, Young, Williams and Dawson are the 5 trades. Peyton Manning & Tom Brady also won for teams as free agents on a short stay as well as being drafted. The lesson here is don't waste your franchise on farming up 1st rounders for the league, and steer clear of trading for a franchise QB. Stick to finding that championship QB by drafting them outside of the 1st round or through free agency.
    • I lost most of the respect I had for Fox in 2010. He should have resigned if he hated the job that much. Instead he stuck for his paycheck and let stuff go to hell.    I burned out on Ron too but my deal breaker issue with him was away from football and after he was gone from the Panthers. He may have been out of his depth but never quit on us.
    • From where they were one year ago to now, pretty incredible. I mean, say what you want about Vrabel he is no Jerrod Mayo.
