DeAngelo

Hey, Jimmy Clausen may end up starting for the Bears. If he throws for over 300 yards in one game, are we going to start threads about how he shouldn't have been cut either?

Who cares what Deangelo does? He is not a Panther any longer. Good luck to him, but I personally could not five less of a fug how many yards he gets.

DeAngelo was not the problem with the running game. The offensive line is not the major problem with the running game. The problem is you have stubborn coaches who cannot adapt to players and force the player into their system.

Either get a back for your system, or adapt to the player.

Rivera/Shula want their every down RBs to be around 230 pounds. They want them to run through the hole and use their blocks - even if it means running into defenders. They do not want RBs extending the run to the sideline while looking for a hole.

This is what is broken with the Panthers. The coaches do not know how to use their players effectively. They seem to want the John Riggins, Larry Csonka, or Jerome Bettis style of RB. DeAngelo should have always played lighter and been allowed to bounce it down the line with patience. No point in running into the back of the OL and hope for more yardage. The DL in the NFL is too big, fast, and strong to get away with that. Not to mention the OL is more athletic and quick for pass blocking in the modern NFL. Hard to find road graders team stocked up on and paid very well from previous decades. The Panthers design their runs with one hole for the back to run through if it is there. Other teams like the Patriots, Steelers, Packers, and Seahawks design running plays with 2 or 3 options for the RB to find a hole.

Shula is stuck in the past. Nothing new.

Brandon Lafell, Steve Smith, and DeAngelo Williams actually have better chances at making teams better and winning a Super Bowl now they have left the Panthers broken offensive system.

This is what I'm thinking.  Maybe DeAngelo had to gain the 15 pounds as a Panther because all of his runs here were straight up the middle and he needed the extra weight to either gain yards or avoid injury.  A lot of his runs last night were to the outside where he is best suited as a RB.  The Steelers are using him to his best advantage so he lost weight to be more effective.  I'm sure some of his weight loss was also due to a new team and proving his worth in the league but I can't hate on the guy, he was very productive for us.

it was discussed at length in all pro last year.  i won't get into too many details but here's what everyone needs to know

-not particularly well liked in the building or by the players/staff

-knew he was on the chopping block in 2014 and had a dgaf attitude in light of it

it was basically spelled out on the TV broadcast last night that his diet and conditioning were crap in carolina yet people who have pointed that out in this topic are "haters".  right.

i've pointed it out before but it seems like many of the hurney era players tend to take being released poorly.  like the panthers org owes them something above and beyond the millions in guaranteed money they were paid to pace up and down the sidelines in sweats.  that's indicative of a culture change and it's something we needed very badly.

Good synopsis.

I do think the GM change was ill received by most of the guys Hurney had given fat contracts to (gee, wonder why).

There's definitely plenty of evidence that Hurney had created a culture of entitlement and some players had gotten used to it. Said players were not happy when suddenly they were forced to actually work hard to keep their jobs again.

(kind of like a real GM usually makes you do)

I think it was a combination of everything here.  He probably is in better shape, but his coaching and line is much better as well.   His team also has a better passing game than we have so that opens up things for the running game as well.    I think he did slack here the last couple of years while running, you could tell that any touch on him he would just fall down and he really was never a "scat back" here till then.    So yeah, it's a combo of things and it is what it is.

A lot of you dudes should be ashamed to call yourself Panther fans. DWill is one of the best to ever lace them up in Panther gear.

We are PANTHERS fans.......NOT DWILL fans.

Guy got complacent here......guy got out of shape here....guy was a pissy little diva here.....guy made an ass out of himself as he left here.

This is what I'm thinking.  Maybe you don't know what you are talking about.  Pretty good odds on that.

This fan base is ridiculous....keeps blaming the coaches for players that do not execute nor deliver.

The weight loss was due to the fact that he could no longer coast here on that fat Hurney contract.

The same reason Smitty started off strong last year and then fizzled

Defenses put more coverage towards him as the season progressed.  He still killed it in the playoffs and was a factor throughout the season.  Lumping Steve in the same category as DeAngelo and other vets who fizzled is not accurate.

Not a single person except Deangelo haters have even mentioned that he shouldn't be cut. I'm a huge Deangelo fan and would rather have the cap space for Cam and Luke's contracts.

What people are arguing about are the dorks who are pretending that Deangelo sucked here and are shocked that he is a good RB elsewhere.

    • if  ANYONE actually goes & looks at the FACTS on rookie Qb's after 2 full seasons as a starter in the NFL & they are still well below average do they rarely ever actually become top tier Qb's & instead most likely either do not recieve a second contract & or become life long backups...just saying
    • So he became GM and decided not to address the weakness in the QB room following one of the worst rookie QB performances in NFL history?  There were options last season other than signing Dalton to a 2 year deal. Brissett and Jones by a wide margin, both of whom outplayed Bryce, Wilson, Winston, hell even Rivers off the couch was more exciting at the QB position. The time to address the failure in the QB room was last year but instead people on the Huddle cheered when we brought Dalton back then cheered when we were able to get anything for him after they finally realized he was washed up like a few of had been saying all along and got poo'd for even mentioning.  This year, the options were more limited obviously, especially since we lost Icky. It changed the dynamic of our draft. I think we were stuck this year keeping Bryce, but i still think giving him a 5th year option for what has amounted to replacement worthy performance was the wrong move. Why guarantee 25m if you're planning to replace him? You think he's going to want to be a bridge QB? Hell no. He's going to want out and we'll end up cutting him if he has another lackluster season because no one is trading for him with that price tag.  Were there better options as far as production available. A couple. Were there guys available with more physical tools than Bryce, Pickett or Grier, you damn well better believe there were. I've been saying all along, you always keep looking for your 1b. Bryce has yet to prove he can be a starter. Keep looking for someone who may. Put competition in camp. Let the best QB lead the team. Stop settling for less than mediocre.
