CHARLOTTE -- Sometimes playing on the defensive line involves occupying space, blockers or both to allow teammates to make plays.

Sunday’s season opener against the Jaguars was one of those days for defensive end Kony Ealyicon-article-link.gif , who did not show up with a statistic on the box score but earned a positive review from head coach Ron Rivera.

"I thought Kony had a good game," Rivera said Monday. "It’s not going to reflect in the stats, but when you go back, you look at the plays he allowed to happen by his teammates. Those are the things you get excited about.

"He did the dirty work this week. He got doubled at times in the running game and took up two blockers, and he held the point of attack very nicely and allowed the linebackers to run freely."

I remember a player who did dirty work his first few seasons then came out of no where to become one of the top Defensive ends. His name is Greg Hardy. 

 

I have confidence that Ealy will get better each and every game, then in the distant future, the lights will come on and not only will he do the dirty work, but he will produce great numbers. He just needs to apply himself. He definitely has something to fight for.

I've said it before, Ealy has all the measurables Hardy had. It took Hardy until year 3 before he put it all together. Hopefully Ealy will do the same.

The one thing I think Ealy may be lacking is Hardy's "crazy factor".  It's kind of like how the crazy girls are always the best in bed, Hardy had an extra edge that made him a great player.  I know it's a stretch but I'm just saying....

Oh I know exactly what you are saying lol. He also lacks some of Hardy's athleticism, but he can make up for that if he works hard.

i disagree. On the crazy part at least. He's the quiet type which can be more dangerous. I don't remember who said it but the loud guy at the club is just putting up a front. The quiet guys don't bolster one minute there fine the next your collecting your teeth.

      yeah, now it's going to get awkward.  The team circles pay attention to all this stuff.  All the wives and girlfriends see the posts.  They all talk like everyone.  Football is just a normal world outside of the fact they play a game for lots of money.  Gossip travels. They know the Theilen's want out at this point.  Carolina is now the disappointed failed trade location.    So now AT takes sort of an inhouse hit in Carolina IMO

      Ummm... The dude looked like he was about 180 pounds soaking wet with us (I don't care what his listed weight was/is) - he would have been destroyed in the run game even more than our current and past crappy ILBs. The problem is we primarily play 3-4 or nickel/dime - there is little room on the field for him because he isnt an edge LB blitzer and he can't cover for crap. The only thing he can do kind of well is be an in-the-box safety that can try and beat blockers to the spot because of his athleticism. Washington was able to make him work last year because they used him solely as an in-the-box safety and almost exclusively ran a single high FS. The funny thing is they had good yards/game stats against the pass despite most of their secondary having embarrassingly low PFF grades. Washington was also terrible against the run, which might explain why they gave up so few yards passing.

      Just get the deal done. We've teased it so much that the Thielen's expect it. Now we run the risk of our veteran WR locker room presence becoming disgruntled. Just take what we can get, make him happy, and get future assets while freeing up snaps for guys who will be here beyond this season.
