Mike Shula - update for the haters

What amazes me is that the 4th and 1 call is the one most people are complaining about when that was probably the most agressive call of the game and gave Cam two good options.

If Shula is too conservative, then why in the hell are the haters picking that play? If Cam had played it right, the Panthers could very well have had another 7 points before the half. What kind of moron bitches about him going for points there, and then calls him too conservative in the same breath?

While I admit he's improved, the third and fourth down situation before halftime was poo. When will he realize that only needing one yard with Cam should be qb sneak 9/10 times. Yeah the fourth down play was executed wrong, but hey, do that poo on third down.

Cam could easily have run for a 1st down on the 4th and 1 call that was made. Shula didn't run out on the field and make him float that throw short and behind Olsen. It is almost always Cam's decision to make on any given play. The same goes for whether he throws it deep or short. I  distinctly remember on 2nd and 8 of that same drive where Cam went downfield when he had Tolbert all by himself about 3-5 yards past the LOS, which could have easily picked up 1st down and would have negated the need for a 4th down call in the first place.

Some of you need to understand that, while Cam is playing great right now, he stil makes mistakes and you don't have to blame everybody but him to make it OK. He is still learning, and that's just fine, because he's getting better every week while we're winning. A perfect situation for us, IMO.

So far Shula has been conservative this year, and basically has eliminated all the "WTF was that calls" (the third and 2 bombs).  I think the improved oline helps quite a bit.  The run game isn't great but we are still usually getting out of the backfield unlike points of last year.

He's done better with the short and intermediate passing and he's given Cam a system that Cam can manipulate into the teams best interests.

I read a quote from Olsen saying that they ran the same play out of the same formation the series before. But I agree with your overall post.

Hmm. Maybe that is where they saw the opportunity.  I did not see that and I was looking for it after what Cincy did to em.

Shula has his strengths and weaknesses, but his best quality is QB coaching. No one can say he has not developed Cam into a true NFL QB.  Give the man some better WRs and keep improving the line and people will call him a great OC.
