Cam Newton, the next Steve Young? But better?

The 49ers were the last dynasty of the pre-salary cap era. I thought Siefert would be a good coach for the Panthers....hey everybody is wrong once in awhile

Siefert was the Barry Switzer of the 49ers. Just rode the coattails of a great team. Hated when we got him as a head coach. Worst decision Panthers ever made and hopefully ever will. Had to have been either blackmail or a bad bet involved in that one.

Yeah, Seifert had the best winning % for a HC. And then came to Carolina and blew that all  hell. lol

But the system that Walsh set up made him look better thn he was.

Side question for the older crowd, how did they usher in salary cap?

I don't know that it was ushered in so to speak, mid 1990's I believe. It was basically to prevent wealthier teams from dominating the league by signing players.

I do know that if it wasn't for the USFL players today probably wouldn't be getting the the money they are. I mean, as of today, maybe they would. But the USFL threw serious money at players back then prompting the NFL to compete.

I know when. I was more wondering how. Were there teams already over the cap? Was there a grace period?

Wasnt old enough to give a crap about football back then, wish they would replay those old school games in the offseason.

Ive never even seen a game with Joe Montana. Would like to watch him 1 time atleast.

Watched him from his rookie season till the end of his career.  Ditto Elway, Marino, Aikman, Kelly, Favre and many others.

Also old enough to have watched guys like Staubach, Bradshaw, Stabler, Tarkenton and more.

I've seen a lot of great quarterbacking in my time.

Each year, Cam gets compared to another QB. Early on he was compared to Vick, then Cunningham, and here we are with Young. It's a stair step progression upwards as each QB of the past they bring up is better, sometimes much better, than the one before.

When they start doing this, they are delineating someone's rise to greatness. And we are still years away from Cam's ceiling, I think. If he keeps developing his game this year, the comparisons will start falling off and he'll stand alone for his style and capabilities.

Then the next generation will be judged against him.

It's funny looking back on certain players and certain situations.  I remember two different occasions involving incoming quarterbacks where I thought "Well this team is screwed"  The first was Steve Young, the next was Tom Brady.  Now Young was following the great Joe Montana so it's easy to have this thought, but Brady was just following Drew Bledsoe...still I thought both would be bad transitions and I was wrong on both counts.  Of course Steve Young had a nice supporting cast in his early days if I remember correctly.

Don't forget Brett Farve to Aaron Rogers as well.

Just goes to show, what a good organization, talent, time to learn, and coaching can do for the next QB.

    • Which is why I'm all for trading Lamelo. Guy misses half of every season. I swear he just likes to sit on the bench to show off his street clothes. I think it negatively impacts the other guys who do the same. If guys don't want to play, they don't need to be here. Coach and gm need to get stricter
    • See, I have a different view of it. I think that just the opposite is very true, and often proven on our very own team.  Look at the impact that CMC had when he was here.  Look at how bring in two top rate IOL to play guard last season made a huge difference in finally getting a stable front for Bryce to live behind. It took a while for it to bear fruit, but those last games were just relevatory. And off ball linebackers like Luke Kuechly, not just running a defense but dictating the game when he's on the field, truly remarkable what a difference that makes. Personally, he had as much or maybe even more to do with that Super Bowl appearance as Cam did.  What I see in the NFL is teams trying hard to cover up for a lack of good linebackers by stacking the D-line. But it gives them a crust defense, one that is hard and crunchy on the outside but a feast within. Linebackers shouldn't just rule the middle of the field, but should be directing traffic and working as enforcers.  But hey, whatever. "Devalued" positions often come back to bite you in the ass when they are neglected. Ask anyone who has had to clean up the mess left behind by a former college coach who took over a pro team and brought their college recruiting mindset in. Yanno, like Matt Rhule did.
    • I see it this way--XL was raw.  Raw players when drafted who are forced to start immediately are very raw players in the NFL-- How is he helped? TMac will shift the focus of the defense away from XL.  XL will be more experienced.  He will have an offseason of jugs work.  He is a very good athlete.  He can only get better.  Wallace?  Same thing.  He will get better with an improved defensive front and the addition of these heat-seeking head hunters at S.  I think about the players we will have on defense in 2025 that we did not have in 2024. Derrick Brown. DE Brown III NT Wharton DE Jones Edge Moehrig S Princely. Edge Scourton. Edge Ransom. S Cam Jackson NT Roseboom  LB While we may not know what we have, we know what we don't have--
