Rivera on Cameron Artis-Payne

I know there was a lot of discussion about the decision to put Cameron Artis Payne in the game for the big, failed conversion play.  Which may or may not have been his fault (cough, Dickson, cough)   but I found it interesting to hear Ron Rivera spend a significant portion of his time talking about him on his weekly interview on Sirius XM on Tuesday afternoon.

No link but to paraphrase Ron was very adamant about giving Artis-Payne more work.  He said they can't expect him to come in for one or two plays and be productive.  Also pointed out that they want to save Stewart for the playoffs (which was in itself interesting/exciting). Neither he nor the interviewers mentioned Fozzy even though he is obviously in the rotation.

If you ask a RB they want you to feed them the ball.  But I'm not sure Stewart is of the same mindset....not that there is anything wrong with that.  I would love to see us get up by a few scores and see what Artis-Payne can do with extended playing time.

Whoever is actually in charge of rotating guys in is doing a terrible job. Position coaches? Stewart has consistently gone way over the number of snaps that Ron wants him to play and Allen played 78 on Sunday when he is supposed to max out at 40. Addison's injury had some to do with that but that was later in the game that happened.

damn good question that deserves its own thread.  I think Allen being in the game a lot was part of the plan, because they wanted to pressure Bradford.  But I'm convinced Delaire could have been effective as well.  In terms of offense, is that on the sidelines or up in the booth?

This is obviously not the Panthers, but in response to criticism about Mathews not getting enough carries for the Eagles, Chip Kelly said that it was the position coaches who are in charge of subbing their groups. I'd have to imagine it's somewhat similar. Obviously the personnel has to mesh with the playcall so I don't know how much influence the OC has.

Delaire did get a fairly decent number of snaps.  I think he was rotating with Horton or Addison?  Here are the DE / DT snap counts.  Maybe part of the problem wit Allen's high snaps is due to Dwan Edward's injury and us being thin at Dline in general right now?

But I fully agree that rotation of younger players is an issue this season.  Tre Boston and CAP especially need to be getting more playing time.

With Shaq injured, Bene got a ton of snaps, so at least he is getting in the rotation regularly...

In RR's presser yesterday he was asked about snap counts, and he was adamant that there needs to be more rotation and in the case of Jared Allen, he was supposed to be rotated much more than he was and Ron said that he "had addressed it". He went on to say that Jared likes to get into a rhythm and while that's understandable, the team has to get young guys more snaps so that they're ready for big plays in big games and it keeps the vets fresh down the stretch. I'm sure that the rotation of players falls to the position coaches, and I'm sure Ron has made it clear that more attention needs to be paid to that.

That's what you get with a former player as your coach. He understands how the players think and how they can or can't hold up for the length of a season. I bet starting Monday you'll see a lot more guys running on and off the field and that's going to be huge for us come December.

That actually had to do with the personnel the Eagles use. They have at least 3 WR in the game at all times which means we had to be in nickel all game. Shaq wouldn't have seen the field even if he was healthy.

Come to think of it, how crappy of a job is it to be the one to tell Allen or TD or any of our top guys to sit out a down or two?  Rivera already talked about TD breathing down his neck directly behind him when he came out for a play.

I'm sure Allen is the same way.  Allen also obviously smelled blood in the water and mentioned after the game how bad he felt sitting out the injury right after the trade.

Yeah, has to be a tough one, but there are a couple of things going for the team in this case. 1) We have really good position coaches who have a good relationship with their players. Players tend to trust coaches who've played or are mainstays with a team. 2) Winning. Winning makes it easier to take a breather on the sideline. If we weren't winning, guys might have more of a concern with their own playing time, but winning is a good cure for that.

Rivera always mentions doing the small things right consistently. This is one of those things. You can't win games in December, January or the one in February on 2nd down in October or November. Ron understands this and rotating players early in the season might buy you an extra quarter out of a solid vet's season when it matters most in a tight game.

Indeed.  I don't know how you keep TD out for any length of time the way he's playing.  [Meaning, he can't stand to come out... not that we shouldn't TRY to give him some breaks.  I think he's just excited that he and Luke are back as a duo and the two of them are wreaking havoc!]

Allen seems to have the same kind of drive ("if I can walk, I can play..." and his having only missed 3 games due to injury in what? 12 years?)

But hopefully these guys will realize it's to the team's benefit to keep them fresh and also give the younger guys meaningful play time.

Hopefully the Colts will prove to be an opponent where we can build a solid lead and a bit of space to allow some of the younger guys more opportunity.  Tennessee too might provide opportunities.

I hope too that there's some way (apart from injury!) that Wegher & Marlowe can get activated and get some live game play, but right now, I'm not seeing how unless they could play the ST slots that someone like Webb or Ben Jacobs are playing.

    • Lol, good one. Rod will never let Necas Play center
    • All I can say is... I have some happiness off the rags choking and losing to the Panthers. Hopefully the Western conference team wins the Stanley cup, but now I can be 100% uninvested in the playoffs
