What has happened to Benwikere?

Some here are overthinking a bit as far as why he's struggling.

Yes, he was better outside last year. That's his natural position. He's not a slot corner. He does his best work on the sidelines where he only has to know where the safety coverage is to know where he should be positioned. In the slot, he has to now know where his LB help is in coverage, where the outside coverage help is, and the deep part of the field coverage is. If he is mistaken on any of that or guesses right but loses the TE or outside receiver because he's having to focus on all 3 at once to determine who he is supposed to pick up, he'll obviously look lost. He's not a natural nickel for that reason.

When Bene shifts outside during man coverage, he looks like the Bene from last year. Why? Because now he just has to avoid letting his man get over the top of him and he can react more and see more.

Bene is gonna get picked on a LOT during this game. He has to step up and our outside backers have to be on the spot with inside crossing routes, because that is where we are going to get hit all game. Rodgers is going to try to dink and dunk us on those 5 yard passes that turn into 15 yard gains and then hit us deep. We just need Bene to lock up the shallow portion of  the field to his side and undercut intermediate, one-cut routes when he can.

I hope Shaq is feeling up to snuff today.

Bene made the comment on WFNZ that on the Marshall TD he was trying to avoid contact because it would have led to a PI and a 1st down on the goal line.  That thinking led to Marshall's push off and a TD anyway.  Rivera spoke to him about it and said he'd rather see him play aggressive.  So let's see how Bene plays in this game.  Look for him to pick his spots and play a grittier game.

Bene will be fine. Still a young player figuring everything out and out playing what he was expected to do at his draft position. I am interested to see how he develops at the slot and what we intend on doing with him in the future.

Nothing.

Sophomore Slump + Playing in the Slot (new role in our scheme). Bene played out of his mind on the outside last season because he's better suited there, but with us signing Tillman to play there this past off-season he got shifted to the inside. Seniority, I suppose. After all, it wasn't luck that had opposing QBs completing like 47-48% of their passes in his direction.

So nothing happened or things the things you listed happened?

    • I’m old enough to remember when I wanted to draft Njoku We brought back Mitchell and officially kept Tremble. Mitchell Evans isn’t going anywhere. Sanders who knows, he was awful last year I fully agree we need a better TE. This room is awful Njoku would be a massive help in the red zone. However it really seems like Dan and the FO prefer to go young on offense
    • You’re underselling Loveland imo. He’s so damn good. You can line him out wide and count on him to win 1 v 1. I don’t see that from Sadiq. Loveland is going to go over 1000 yards next season I’m not overly asking for a WR3. It’s just one of the few directions Morgan could go in round 1.  Let’s say Thieneman, Fano and Cooper are all on the board it’s a tough decision. I just don’t see how this team would take Sadiq over some of those guys given the way they run their offense. Our tight end room is easily bottom of the league so I can definitely see why someone would want a tight end though. At one point during the season I was on the Sadiq train as well. I just don’t think value wise for us specifically it makes sense given our team as a whole As far as tight ends go in this draft I really like Max Klare. Very smooth mover
    • Some of you need some serious help with the way 9 lives rent free in your heads I know for a fact, Dan loves Bryce. Bryce is his guy. This offense is very young and they’re asking Bryce to do a lot. With Idzik taking over playcalling duties it’s a move that is another step in the process of Bryce taking control of the offense. 24 years old. This youth movement on offense and putting more on 9’s shoulders is going to pay off in the long run
