Panthers cut long snapper Aiken

...meaning there's an open spot on the roster for one of the players they just worked out, or a pickup from our practice squad (or someone elses).

Speaking of the practice squad, a minor note: The Panthers brought back G Reese Dismukes and let go of T Pierce Burton.

So cool to get a game check for a few days work

JJ's headache was a bit expensive, eh?!  But I'm glad we signed Aiken.  It was nice to have the peace of mind that we had a competent backup if he'd been needed going into such a big game.

He can tell his grandchildren one day that he was a part of the greatest NFL team that ever was, the only team to ever go 19-0.

That's pretty funny.  Yes, he could be a great trivia question: Who was on the great 2015 Panthers roster for only 72 hours?

This is the type of dude who gets a SB ring and you see it on pawnstars four years later trying to figure out who the hell is that guy

He actually got a SB ring last year with the Patriots. Lost his job after they took that Navy LS in the 5th round.

Awesome job keeping up with movement at the bottom of the roster---very important to this team's development.  I would love to go back and see the "Superb owl" comments after we signed Norwell, Remmers, Coleman, etc.

Question now is do we sign one of the CB's we worked out since Peanut is expected to be out a couple weeks or do we sign another G/T to replace Amini.

Or someone out of the blue.

You never know.

Also worth noting that Addison is hurt and Horton is suspended.

I am guessing we bring in a cb as i think we have more depth on the d line.  We brought in finnegan, former panther robert mcclain, and bradley fletcher.  Im guessing mcclain since i know he has played some in the nickel position and the panthers know him.

I see finnegan had signed a 5 year/50M contract with stl and caused them 18M in dead money after they cut him after 2 years.  Ouch.

I think with Delaire being healthy & available, the injury to Addison isn't so critical.  After all Delaire was inactive against Dallas, so the net number of DEs playing wouldn't change with Addison out and Delaire in.  You didn't mention Star's injury... but fortunately neither that nor Addison's injury sounds too serious.  We've got Dwan back, which helps.

On Oline, I think the depth of Daryl Williams, Chris Scott and Velasco might be enough.  Daryl got some snaps at RG a week ago, and Ron was really pleased, and Remmers could always slide in to Guard, letting Williams play Tackle, if need be.

So, I do think CB is probably the biggest need if Tillman is going to be out several games.

What do you all think about any of the DBs on our PS:

Lou Young, Marcus Ball, and the new guy Ras I Dowling?  Any of them likely to get called up?

Or what about any of the CBs we cut at the start of the season?  Any of them decent at Nickel or could any of them play outside, leaving Bene to move back to Nickel?

  • DeAndre Presley (Free Agent)
  • Melvin White (Rams Practice Squad)
  • TJ Heath (Falcons Practice Squad)
  • Carrington Byndom (Cardinals Practice Squad)

I'd think a guy who's been practicing the system the entire season could be worth a look prior to a new guy unless the new guy has a significant talent advantage.

The question becomes whether someone who's still unemployed this far into the season has such an advantage.

We still have 4 healthy DE's so that's not really that big of a deal. I could see us going with a DT if Star is more hobbled than they are letting on. Colin Cole being brought back is a possibility even though he was quite poor at the beginning of the year. Quality big guys are much tougher to find in general and especially this late and the time off might have been good for his old legs as long as he's been keeping in shape.

    • I see they blamed Slavin for the goal like I did.
    • See this is the problem, you say "can't get off the line quick" and "can't separate quick" but in reality it's "he can get off the line better and create more separation" which are two completely different things. If he couldn't get off the line or separate, he wouldn't have put up the numbers he did and end up a Top 10 pick. But he can get better, and maybe more accurately, consistent with them both, and that will take his game to the next level.  These are things that are also much easier to improve once you get to the NFL than things like being a poor route runner or having bad hands, two of his strengths. Thinking he can't get open in the short passing game also shows you haven't watched enough tape on him, as he was used in that role so much in college with little issue getting open and making plays. And him not using his physicality as much isn't even something that hurts his game because he's so much more agile than a player of his size should be, which he used to his advantage.  Instead of throwing passes where he'd go up and box out a player like a TE or Mike Evans does, they use his athleticism and put the ball in places that only he can get to it, and he usually does (and yes, he'll still be able to do that against NFL DB's with his catch radius). But now that he's in the NFL, I'd like to see him get stronger and add that to his game because it also will help him take his game to another level. As I've said before, if he doesn't improve on those things at all, I think he's a Top 25 WR in this league, he's already that good.  But I think he'll improve on those things and be a perennial Top 10 WR and in his prime is considered and perform like Top 5 guy in some years. My expectations for him this year at 800 yards and 8 TDs (although I do think he'll get to 10 TDs) with a real chance at getting to 1,000.  But those expectations are because I think Thielen will lead the team in yards with close to 1k and XL/Coker each end up in the 500-600 range themselves, just too many mouths to feed this year for a rookie to dominate yardage, especially if we're running the ball well again. But if Thielen can't stay healthy or puts up sub 750 yards, then yea, my expectations for T-Mac likely shift to getting to 1k as a rookie.
    • Svech only 1 goal behind the guy they've pretty much already given the Conn Smythe to...
