Do you think we've held back on offense?

lightsout

I got the feeling in the last month of the season. We didn't take a lot of risks. We played very much within ourselves and didn't get too exotic, really. Ran some base stuff and ate teams up with it because we were simply better. Coaches knew we were better, so they didn't break out the big guns.

Fast forward to Seattle in the playoffs. We came out swinging. Got the big lead, backed down. Then, Arizona happened. No backing down. The Philly Brown TD on the crossing route, that was a route combination I don't think we've ran all season. A few other plays, I said the same thing. The Cam power run that he scored on by flipping over (I think) Kalil, we haven't ran that since way early in the season, from my recollection.

Do you think we saved our best plays for this moment? To make our run and get in the big game, only to unleash it on an unsuspecting opponent? Or did we simply design some new plays for Arizona? If that is the case, then I can only assume plays will be designed specifically for Denver as well.

Regardless, if we DID save our best stuff on offense for now, then Denver is in for a very, very bad day. Because we looked like an offensive juggernaut Sunday. If that is a sign of things to come, I'll almost feel bad for Denver.

Almost.

Teams have tendencies, and then later in the season when teams have enough info to key in on your tendencies, you switch it up and do the unexpected.

AZ doesn't match up well with Carolina at all, hence the blowout. Seattle is a better match up, but they had an early meltdown that made it one sided. Next season our biggest threat will be Seattle again. AZ is just not on our level, and not built to beat our type of team.

I saw Brian Baldinger on NFL network this morning breaking down some Panther film and one of the best things he said was that the Panther don't have tendencies on offense.  We have bread and butter plays but the gameplan each week changes based on the weakness of the opposing defense.  That's why Philly Brown does great one week, the next week it's Funchess, or Ginn going over the top, or even Cotchery getting involved.  He basically said you can't defend us based off watching film of pervious games and trying to predict the gameplan.  Add to that vast amount of running plays and the Panthers are almost impossible to defend, calling Cam a DC's worst nightmare.

    • I mean, he's a professional athlete.  What you think as a fan vs what he should think as a player are completely different.  Being bad doesn't mean you should lack confidence in yourself, and really that is true in all forms of life.  Do everything you want to do with confidence. Justin Fields sucks, but does he ever play like someone who doesn't believe in his own abilities?   Obviously you need more than confidence to be a high-level NFL player, and Bryce will never be that.  But he could still create 2-3 extra plays a game if he allowed himself to play more "free" like he did in the second half of last season.  The fact he refuses to use his legs to pick up yards nowadays hurts this team.  Simple things like that would go a long way for us, even if not for him.
    • I've always thought it odd that the QB is the only guy in the roster who carries a record. If a RB puts up 1200 yards but the team sucks then everyone still says the RB had a good year. If a QB puts up good numbers put the D is atrocious and the win loss record isn't great due to that then the narrative is that the QB can't win. Now that we're finding a way to win with suddenly dominant D and dominate running game people are trying to shift to this "Bryce is just a winner" narrative while he puts up bottom of the league numbers while near the top of the league in turnovers. It's just funny to watch.
