Eric Davis: Kerry Collins quit on the Panthers and didn't get as much heat

He came into the head coach's office, told him "his heart wasn't in it" and quit.

After we let him go, his heart miraculously healed enough to play for a couple of other teams.

He was quarterbacking the Giants when the Ravens pounded them in their first Super Bowl.

A couple more than a few you mean - Saints, Raiders, Giants, Colts, and Titans.

Collins ended up with a lot of passing yards, but he was never really a winner or a leader.

FWIW It was Moose that Collins dropped the N bomb on...

Who remembers, around the same time, Collins got a black eye from Norberto Davidds-Garrido? Supposedly they were play fighting... but the spin was that it was in response to the racial slur or something like that...

I always heard it was Lathon that hit him.  I also always though he called Lathon the N word.  The most I do remember from that time is every time I went out drinking uptown, which was about every night since I lived there, you were guaranteed to find Kerry somewhere uptown drinking.  Either with Garcia or about 3 girls.

Collins wasn't a racist, but he definitely offended Muhammed when he used the N word with him.  Article recounting it here:  http://www.nytimes.com/1997/08/24/sports/panthers-collins-finds-himself-tangled-up-in-racial-barbs.html.

He was first and foremost a drunk though, and he didn't quit, he was released when he told Capers that his heart wasn't in the game.  I would like to think that our current coach would send him to rehab, but Capers had personnel control and basically kicked him off the team.  The Saints picked him up and then later that year he got his first DUI.  After rehab he got his career back on track.

Of course, but as long as you have idiots like Haslam hiring jokers like Ray Farmer, there will be someone who thinks they can fix a drunk and make him work.

And FWIW, I think Collins had displayed more pro-level physical talent coming out of Penn State than Manziel had when he came out.

He was really a 90s QB, and things were a lot different back then. I think Manziel gets a bad rap as far as athleticism and pro talent goes, especially considering today's nfl. If he had his head on straight, and went somewhere that knew how to use him, he would absolutely be worth a first round grade.

Collins was just a lumbering giant. He was also from an era when where you went to school was more important than what you did there. PSU was obviously a power house, so he was a top prospect. It doesn't make much sense but this was a big deal prior to like the early 2000s.

I mean poo look at this video of the 1997 playoff game against Dallas. Kerry throws like poo
