That's how we felt on the sidelines after watching Favre celebrate like he had just won the lottery. The guy was loving it, and from then on, we all let loose. Guys started making plays all over the field. We covered kicks like junkyard dogs. Interceptions on defense. More points on the offensive side of the ball.

Man, we whipped the Bears on that night.

I don't know Cam Newton and I'm not in the Carolina Panthers' locker room as they prep for Super Bowl 50. But when I watch the Panthers' quarterback drop his shoulder on a linebacker or dive over the goal line head first -- as he did in the NFC Championship Game against the Arizona Cardinals -- it reminds me of playing with Favre.

Players gravitate toward that kind of enthusiasm and passion from their quarterback. It's leadership, really, in the eyes of the locker room. So too is taking a lick and popping up with a smile on your face.

The guy (Newton) has ridiculous ability, and it feeds into the Panthers' obvious swagger. At 17-1 and on the cusp of a Super Bowl title, their confidence is off the charts. Head coach Ron Rivera has a lot to do with that. He is the right man for this group. But I would be crazy if I didn't also point to Cam, because he drives the bus for this team.

Whether it's a rocket throw down the field for a score or the designed QB runs that leave Newton exposed to downhill collisions, he gets up, drops the "dab," signals for a first down with a smile and keeps going.

Sign me up.

Good stuff.

As one that never liked Favre as a player. (Didn't think he was as good as media made him out to be) I always appreciated and admired his passion for playing the game. He had a ball playing and loved his teammates. Just like Cam. But to me that's where the similarities stop. I think Cam is a whole lot better play but I am also a homer so there. ;-)

They have an additional valid comparison outside of their mutual passion for the game.

They both throw the ball in what I like to think of as "traditional gun-slinger" mode.  In other words, their arms are/were so strong and they are/were both extremely confident that they can/could make ANY throw from ANY arm-angle at (almost) any step in their drop-back (with the occasional resulting craziness from doing so).

Yes Favre did have a strong arm but I always saw him more as a "hope and a prayer" passer much like Delhomme was sometimes. One of the main reasons both had high Int percentages. I see Cam more as a precision passer.

Cam is getting there, but he wasn't a few years ago.  A lot of that is learning to take what the defense is giving you, and trusting in your teammates to do their job.

When you can't/won't depend on your defense, you start to press.  I think that is one of the reasons that Peyton has always struggled in the playoffs.  Cam is maturing, and is trusting others, it's a beautiful thing to see.

Cam reminds me of Brett in his approach to the game, his arm strength, and his leadership abilities, he reminds me of Elway with his playing style, although Cam is a much better QB than Elway was at this point in their careers.
