How Would You Feel if The Panthers Drafted Derrick Henry in the 1st?

I think its one of the more unlikely draft senarios, but probably the most interesting one if it happened. I look at mock drafts once a week and I always see a few mocking Henry to us.

I for one think it might not be the most practical decision if the Panthers are looking more for needs than wants. But if they go off of purely BPA then its very possible that Henry will be there when we pick. There's no telling how good he'll be in the NFL but he was pretty damn good in college. I like the prospect of drafting him to groom him as the eventual replacement for Stewart. And also as insurance against Stewart who we all know gets injured every other year.

I mean right now who do we really have besides Stewart? This year at least neither Fozzy nor Cameron Artis Payne convinced me they are good enough to be a #1 HB , although to be fair CAP was decent most of the time.

In my fantasy magical universe we would also snag that Gronkowski the younger FB from Kansas State to groom to replace Tolbert. With both Henry and Gronkowski being big 6'3'' dudes who can block, run, and catch passes that would be awesome .

I personally wouldn't like the pick. I'm not sure how well he will transition to the NFL (runs too upright, not very elusive, etc.). But who know, he may end up being very good. Only way it would make sense is if they cut Stewart ($9.5million?) and use that money to address DE in free agency. I think DE is the position to draft in the first round.

I'd love to have a young bruiser who could physically dominate other teams, but I'm not sure about in the 1st round.  Any top 60 RB you take should be one you expect to give at least 250 carries as more of a Bell Cow kind of back.  Is Henry that kind of guy?  I think that's the big question, besides positional devaluation of the RBs.  Can he be a 3 down guy?  Or is 1-2 down guy that can't catch or pass block?  Also, I'm not sure he's a good fit for our read option attack.  He has zero experience with it, and his body type does look like it moves side to side as well as he does N/S.

4th Round?  Sure, but top 60, I have severe reservations.  I mean, we all have to trust in Gettleman, and if he picked him, he has to believe he's a 1,000 yard a season kind of guy.

That's a good point, wasn't thinking about Stewart's salary. I'm not sure the Panthers would have much motive to reduce his salary by much considering he had a great 2015 season ..

Well with that point "not sure how well he'll transition to the NFL" you can say that for a lot of players in the draft. I think he's over-compared to Trent Richardson , they are neither the same person or the same kind of player . Trent is just the most recent Alalabama RB in most people's minds besides Henry so I think they're over-compared.

This guy is Trent Richardson 2.0.

Richardson is 5'9", 230. Henry is 6'3", 245-not the same body type at all. Henry could be a bust like Trent, or he could be a gem like Todd Gurley.

I think a RB is risky if you're picking in the top half of the 1st, but we're almost in the 2nd at 30. I don't think it's likely that he'll be viewed as BPA when our pick comes up though, and he could be already gone too.

Henry's field vision is about the same though.  He's not worth a first round pick whatsoever.

A lot of people said the same about Gurley. They were wrong.

The real question is how will we feel when we draft another LB?

Many of us will bitch and moan because it's not a position of need, just like when Luke was drafted.

I didn't, I wanted Gurley baddddddddddd.  So bad (no homo).  Gurley is not remotely the same kind of RB as Henry.  Do not compare both, please.  I wanted Gurley so bad I picked him in all of my Fantasy leagues in the Top 6 rounds.

    • I watched a clip of all the offensive snaps. Young threw into some tight coverage and the guys made some plays on the ball. He also really missed some throws.  He has this middle of the field thing into a tight window pretty good and made three or four nice plays but he was just too inconsistent with his accuracy especially in the red zone. Today and in general.    That Int where people were chastising Legette for ‘not fighting through the coverage’, he in no way could have gotten to that ball. IMO. I think he thought it was going to hit the ground and didn’t see the defender coming for it. But not sure what he could have done. The camera doesn’t show the spatial relationship very well, I think the ball was way off. maybe 6 feet or more off target to the inside of the field.  Rico is a beast. And a very good receiver.   That was my impression without dissecting and rewinding, just letting the video roll. I did rewind the int two or three times to look at that one.
    • My biggest issue with keeping Darnold, which I felt we should have done, is we would still have Fitterer. And everything that came with that.  I think Morgan is going to be good.  Baker, just did not play well at all here. Not sure what else we were supposed to take away from it at the time.  That’s my short ‘I don’t want to argue about it’ take.
    • Even if we somehow make the playoffs we will be one and done so fast. Seattle, Rams, TB, Panthers, Detroit and Philly are all better than us.
