Charles Johnson officially signs 1-year, $3M deal

It strikes me that we Panthers fans have something else to appreciate about Ted Ginn.   I know it's a different situation... unlike CJ he's played for a number of teams.  But certainly his story about the misery (and failure) of chasing a check vs. playing where you're appreciated and understood I think has probably resonated throughout our locker room and been a great lesson for a lot of players that money isn't everything in terms of football success.  Your fit with a team and its culture is huge.   I'm thinking there will be BIG dividends paid in terms of our ability to keep some players who would have gone elsewhere for more money because of Ted Ginn's and CJ's examples....

A fuller statement by DG on resigning Charles:

Quote

Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman on re-signing DE Charles Johnson: "We worked very closely with Charles and his agent in the last few days to come to an agreement and I'm appreciative of all the hard work put forth to get a deal done. What this deal signifies is Charles is a man of his word and in his heart he bleeds Carolina blue."

I'm still holding out hope that Big Frank will be ready to actually play and has somehow developed (at least in his mentality and has kept up with his work-out/weight conditioning in his extended rehab.) He could be an x-factor and this will be what equates to his contract year.

Honestly, I think Big Frank either needs to call it a career or find another team to practice with this summer. I can't see us passing up on someone because we held a training camp spot for Alexander in the hope against hope that he's not going to be out spending his camp paychecks on a new bong.

Too many chances given to the dude, too many penalties for keeping him and he just keeps thinking this is Cheech and Chong's Football Movie.

Alexander is suspended until late Nov 2016.  Can't practice with any team in training camp.  Won't be on a roster.  Isn't getting paid anything during these 12 months.  Not gonna be signing with us or any other team any time soon.  The earliest he can do anything in the NFL is Nov 25, 2016, I believe.

That's true, but I just think at this point he shouldn't even be on our long-term radar. He's going to be on the couch this year and I would imagine that if he doesn't retire, he's still subject to random drug tests. I'd love to hear a story about him cleaning up and getting his act together to play in 2016, but he's honestly one Adult Swim marathon and a trip to Taco Bell away from throwing away a promising career permanently.

So much potential, just couldn't put down the weed.

In the meantime, CJ turns around and basically says it is all about the team and the fans, takes a big pay cut and comes back into the fold. That's a guy who is worth the effort of working with and maybe even talking him into staying again next year if he is up to it.

"I didn’t want to leave Carolina with that type of season that I had," Johnson said. "I want to prove myself, really. My ego is telling me that I have to prove myself to my teammates. I want to be at that high level that I’ve played at. I’m definitely coming out with some vengeance next year."

I frackin love this guy!  So happy he's back.

    • It appears that he sees things differently than the QB and OC, so Cam's advice is spot on. It isn't about number of targets, it's about quality of targets. Trust and being on the same page. BY doesn't know how to anticipate what XL is doing. And XL doesn't like where BY is placing passes. One on one film study would go a long way. More for BY than XL though. He has to adjust to XL. I really don't think XL can adjust on the fly.
    • If the team shows improvement, then he shouldn't be in danger of losing his job - even if the record doesn't reflect. This was a very young team (with a lot of new vet starters) that overperformed last season. Somebody's doing something right. Consistency is key with so much youth. And we're potentially looking at new starters at ILB and FS. Those are positions that take time to fully understand the defense. ILB calls the front 7. Safety calls the back 4. Injuries at WR and IOL killed the offense last season. Depth needs to be upgraded. Same with Edge. I think they would have won more games if Pat Jones doesn't go down early. Be smart with the roster and draft. Trade players for assets when it's time to pay them more than they're worth - yes, that includes BY if he doesn't make a pretty big jump. That's one of the many reasons Tillis is as important as anyone to the future of this team.
    • He had heart surgery a while back he looks Fraile I hope he is okay
