Cyrus Jones in the 3rd?

Carolina is one of the few teams in the leagues whose roster isn't in turmoil.  They are in a pretty good position going into the draft.  One area that concerns me is special teams, especially punt returns.  Outside of Ginn, the depth at that position is scary.  Still have nightmares of Bersins muff.  Carolina has the luxury to take a few risks in the draft.  I vote for Cyrus Jones in the 3rd.  Hes not the best CB but would make a decent nickel giving depth in that area but also provide depth  in punt returns as he was the best in the country at it in college.

Here he is snapping ankles on a return during the cotton bowl

From a guy that watches a ton of SEC football Cyrus Jones is terrible. I pray we do not draft him anywhere.

as a CB or a return specialist?  Hes a return guy in the NFL which is what I would want him to be on the team.  Maybe Ron can coach up his CB cover skills. who knows.

I think Gettleman is looking to grab a CB 3rd round or later so Jones could definitely be in play, especially as a nickel. Another guy we've met with is Harlan Miller from SE Lousiana, guy is basically a carbon copy of Josh Norman.

I agree Miller looks good as an outside CB

I watched him a lot this year and he plays much better against the run than against the pass, but he does have some speed and good hands. He had a few sideline picks that were really solid, but he got smoked in coverage on the deep ball a lot, as I recall Treadwell demolished him 2 years in a row, and I think that is what we would look for in the draft, that being someone who can cover a Julio Jones type of guy who can go deep and is a physiclaly big WR.  Jones is 5'10, he would struggle against taller WRs with speed and vertical ability.  I would give him a B to B- grade overall, a C to C- on his pass coverage and a B on the run play (this is purely me grading having watched him play every week for a few years, others may have more insight than I do as I am admittedly not an analyst).

As a returner he is really pretty good and I think that really helps him in the draft as much as anything he does in the secondary.  The guy definitely has some speed and can make some cuts.  If we are talking punt returns, I think Ginn has that covered for now, in my opinion what we need is a kick returner, and if we are grabbing someone multi-faceted for returns and also another position role on the team, Kenyan Drake would be the better pick either here or in the 4th.  Drake catches well and has a good first cut, he was the opposite of Henry at RB.

I think a 3rd rd pick is high on this guy but I disagree with others on here that he is terrible, I think he is OK not great because of his coverage limitations, but is helped out by a very good pass rush from AL (which means he might fit pretty well into our scheme).  Again, purely opinion based but based upon me having watched him play every week for 2-3 yrs at this point.  If CB is the way we go and he is available I would go with a bigger guy who can cover better on the deep routes.

    • Sometimes its fun to read the threads/posts.  The panthers could literally hire a groundskeeper and we'd have a thread "improving the field for no other reason to prop up Bryce Young".  Apparently no move is ever done to actually make the team better.  All a conspiracy to just focus on Bryce Young. Or suddenly daydreaming and reminiscing about Sam Darnold when he was hated more than Bryce Young.  Its really fun to do a message board search about Darnold during that time period.   Or thinking there is just a tree that grows QB, and you can just easily go up and pluck one.
    • Yeah okay. We as an organization have been more patient with him than many. And there has been a small parade of guys drafted since he was, also to bad teams, that have passed him. Some have lapped him. As a fan I am out of patience but he gets this year it is out of my hands always has been. I just hope the bar is higher than it has been for him.    FWIW, XL dropped two passes last year. He did do some other bad stuff, just saying.
    • Except it takes those QB's a few years to develop because they needed to learn the mental side of the game and have it catch up to their physical attributes. Bryce was supposed to be a QB savant who already had a fully developed mental side of the game and that was going to make up for his lack of physical ability.  And his lack of NFL level QB physical traits has been clear as day to anyone who has watched him the last 3 years, mainly, he just doesn't have an NFL arm, he can't zip the ball into tight spaces or throw on a line down the field like is needed at this level.
