Other soundbites today from Gettleman concern Kyle Love and the strength of the draft:

The Panthers continue to talk to veteran defensive tackle Kyle Love about bringing him back.

DT Kyle Love remains an option for Panthers. There have been talks. Gettleman reiterated the strength of this draft at OL and DL.

[oops... sorry, there's now a dedicated thread for the Kyle Love news.  There wasn't when I was posting this here.]

Here's more on Star's 5th year option via PFT.  It confirms what @Bartin just posted about different salary scales for players drafted in the top 10 vs. 11 - 32.

General Manager Dave Gettleman said Tuesday at the league meetings that the Panthers will exercise the option on defensive tackle Star Lotulelei. Lotulelei was the 14th pick of the 2013 draft.

Players picked after the 10th pick, the salary for the option year is the average of the third through twenty-fifth highest salaries at the position. Players in the top 10 have their salary set at the average of the 10 highest paid players at the position.

Picking up the option was likely an easy call for the Panthers, who have built a strong defense around Lotulelei, defensive tackle Kawann Short, linebacker Luke Kuechly, linebacker Thomas Davis and cornerback Josh Norman in the last few seasons. Short is set for free agency after the 2016 season as is Norman after he received a franchise tag from the team earlier this month.

That's interesting. Short's long-term deal will impact how much Star makes in 2017. Wonder if DG will get creative with the first year of KK's deal just to help himself a little bit on what we pay Star that season.

    • It appears that he sees things differently than the QB and OC, so Cam's advice is spot on. It isn't about number of targets, it's about quality of targets. Trust and being on the same page. BY doesn't know how to anticipate what XL is doing. And XL doesn't like where BY is placing passes. One on one film study would go a long way. More for BY than XL though. He has to adjust to XL. I really don't think XL can adjust on the fly.
    • If the team shows improvement, then he shouldn't be in danger of losing his job - even if the record doesn't reflect. This was a very young team (with a lot of new vet starters) that overperformed last season. Somebody's doing something right. Consistency is key with so much youth. And we're potentially looking at new starters at ILB and FS. Those are positions that take time to fully understand the defense. ILB calls the front 7. Safety calls the back 4. Injuries at WR and IOL killed the offense last season. Depth needs to be upgraded. Same with Edge. I think they would have won more games if Pat Jones doesn't go down early. Be smart with the roster and draft. Trade players for assets when it's time to pay them more than they're worth - yes, that includes BY if he doesn't make a pretty big jump. That's one of the many reasons Tillis is as important as anyone to the future of this team.
    • He had heart surgery a while back he looks Fraile I hope he is okay
