Short actually lucked out slipping to the 2nd.  He gets his big payday a year early. 1st rounders who perform to expectation or beyond get penalized with the 5th year option.

1st rounders get a better signing bonus, and salary. The 5th year option is a pretty good pay day too. But it does keep them away from that 2nd contract for an extra year. Unless a long term deal gets done first. There is where the money lives. That guarantee money is the meat of the deal 20mil, all the way to 40mil for some players. That is what is waiting for both Stah, and KK.

And knowing the Gman is already planning for this is huge. Though all together, not a big surprise.

It seems like there is a little confusion about the timing of all this for some people. I think the ideal timing scenario is to sign the good player to a long term contract in the offseason BEFORE their final year. That way they are locked up long term and never become a free agent, which could end in disaster. We signed Cam this way. By this rationale, we should sign KK THIS offseason and Star NEXT offseason. We wanted to do Josh this way too but he bet on himself and played his final year of his contract. Good for him but it was a gamble (no pun intended).

TLDR - Star gets signed next offseason and KK gets signed this offseason. This 5th year option allows to not have to do both in the same year.

I agree when it comes to key, core players. We also did sign Luke 2 years before his rookie deal expired which you won't find me complaining about.

Short this year. Star, Trai and possibly Kony and Norwell next year. Kelvin the following year.
