Help me out football historians: what was going on in football in the late 1960s?

It's still the offseason so I feel comfortable posting this.

Simple question: what was going on in the NFL in the 1960s? Answers can include anything, from trivial poo between particular teams, player controversies, or whatever, or big stuff like major rule changes or team location changes. You name it. Tell me anything you got.

I'm writing a screenplay set in April 1968 and I need a group of guys to be having a conversation about football, which I will use as a way to provide exposition on their characters and situation, but I need some good anecdotes to turn into a narrative.

@Mr. Scot I'm counting on you!

The Charlotte area got the Redskins game every Sunday, without fail, every Redskins game.

All games at 1, 2 and 4 o'clock, no Monday Night, Thursday Night or Sunday Night football.  At the end of the season, a few teams got to play on Saturday afternoon.

Shorter season, less playoff teams, less teams period, lots of mud

most important are details about the 1968 offseason or even draft that could've been going on in april 1968 that would've been conversation material, or even stuff about the 1967 season that would be fodder for a couple GIs stationed in vietnam

SO it seems this league the AFL and the NFL are going to merge, What do you think of the new guys.

Don't think they can play with the NFL. Just a bunch of flashy wannabes.

What the hell is a super bowl. I told you the new guys couldn't hang. Starr and Lombardi ate them up.

3 words.

Joe Willie Namath.

Actually no one paid attention to the Jets and Namath until they beat the Colts and Johnny Unitas in the Superbowl. Until that time  In fact 1968 was the first time that the NFL champion wasn't crowned the world champion.

Actually, I got into football in 68 and 69 and was a life long Vikings fan (pre dome)

Went to the Super Bowl and lost to the Chiefs.  Loved the snow games

Cannot tell you at 8 years old a lot else, sorry

For what it is worth, if you set the scene in 1968 in New Orleans you can talk about the realignment where they moved to a different division.

it's at a GI bar in saigon but they're just talking poo about football so literally any subject is up for grabs

The Super Bowl, NFC vs AFC started in 67 but whatever.

Now you do know Namath was drafted in 67 by the Cardinals and the Jets swooped in and grabbed him instead?

    • it's pretty simple IMO.  The Tepper Panthers are the most unsuccessful professional sports in all of sports.  The problem isn't the posters here have changed.  The product dictates the atmosphere more than anything.  In reality, the daily convos about THE worst team in all of pro sports on a fanatics site....is going to feature harsh and critical convo.  Only one entity can actually change that.  It's the Carolina Panthers football team.
    • Yes message boards will always include that sort of stuff… However, this place has been a cess pool since the team took Bryce Young over CJ Stroud. It becomes a problem when it is accepted and promoted, which it has been here (even by at least one mod). Many posters sole purpose on this board is to try to dunk on others for having different opinions. We just had one write a novella on how talking about Bryce Young’s game winning drives “needs to stop”…after a win. They don’t want real conversation. It “needs to stop”. There are many posters here who literally only show up after losses to dead thread and try to dunk on others about the QB (MRenshaw is an easy example). I really don’t see much of that happening the other way around. There’s too many people that would rather the team be bad so they can feel justified for constant doom and gloom and negative opinions. It’s been pointed out by many over the past couple years. This just isn’t a place to have football discussions anymore because of the constant hyperbole. If you don’t subscribe to “Bryce Young is the worst QB ever who can’t throw the ball further than 5 yards and is the reason why we lose any game we lose and doesn’t help in any game we win”, then you are labeled a Bryce Young Stan.
    • if you believe he is watching every NFL game.....every week.....go right ahead.  I get it, he said something you like.  But that's like believing the talking heads on the ESPN shows are watching all the games.  You think Stephen A is watching the Panthers every Sunday too?  If Stephen A needs to go on First Take he certainly can pretend like he has watched every snap any player on the roster has taken lol.   No one is that isn't a Panther fan has been watching the 9-25 career go down every Sunday.  Or even a lot of Sunday's.  You know who knows more about Bryce Young than Long? The collective huddle.  What they are reviewing is stat sheets, highlights and in summaries.  It's an old formula lol.
