Opening Thursday Night. Does it affect roster moves?

Recommended Posts

We will play our final preseason game September 1st and open the season September 8th. That means Week 1 will start for us when we are usually doing exit interviews, practice squad signings and waiver wire pickups...

I would imagine the team will have to enter that final preseason game with their 53 set... Even if its not public information. How could they play anyone but special teamers and camp fodder at that point?

Does this mean those longshots are less likely to be considered for the week 1 53? Do the Panthers make moves to bring in veterans in the 10 days that follow?

It's an interesting question since it is a shorter than usual turn-around. Personally I doubt it affects their plan for that last preseason game all that much since starters barely play in it anyway. Practice squad signing etc. are handled by Gettleman and company, leaving Rivera and the rest of the coaching staff to prepare for week 1.

We need to get down to 53 after preseason game 4, but only 46 are active for week 1 anyway. It's possible, but doubtful that we would have a battle for starting position going into that last preseason game. All that really matters going into week 1 is who is 1st/2nd string. Preseason week 4 is for the 3rd and 4th stringers.

I guess one impact is that there won't be any practice squad for the starters to practice against.  So not sure how they come up with a scout team?

At least it affects both us and Denver equally.  But Ron is already on record from just after the schedule was announced to mention that starting on Thursday will be a bit of a challenge!  But actually, I'm glad he spoke about it, because it just goes to show that the coaches already are looking that far ahead and preparing.  This won't catch them off guard.  They'll have a plan.

It will def advance the schedule a bit.  Where they usually have a week to do all those things they now have just a couple days.  Coach and GM will have some bags under their eyes for that first game.

hope the equipment guys bring red bull and adderall.

A scout team? Why wouldnt they have a scout team to practice against? Hur dur

Looks like I'm wrong...

I thought final roster cuts were on a Sunday and the PS signings were midday Tuesday last season, but now that I look back, it looks like final cuts were on a Saturday, and PS signings were on Monday.  So, if we have a practice squad by Monday September 5th, then yes, there would be a Scout Team.

Why wouldnt they? His point was pretty clearly stated.

The shorter time might take away from a fully assembled and functional scout team available for practicing against before the game. Hur dur

It doesnt really matter when you think about it. If we havnt cut anyone or put people on the practice squad yet, they are still on the team and able to practice

I think to his point is they won't have designated roles yet which may hamper with "practice".
I think we'll see a real air it out attack come week 1.

    • I mean, it's easy to say, "Morgan was Fitterer's right hand man, so he agreed with all the mistakes Fitterer made." Life and managerial structures don't necessarily work that way. GMs aren't perfect, and there are going to be hits and misses most every draft. Most would say that if you can get a couple of starters in a draft that you're doing pretty good. Even if X busts, there are still people in that draft, and an undrafted free agent, that look promising. JT looked pretty good yesterday. Calculate in the 2025 draft, which I think is fair, and I'm not going to complain. Where I think Dan has not gotten it right is overpaying a couple of free agents. and, sorry, I don't accept the "Panthers tax" argument because there is modest overpaying and gross overpaying.  I'm very much more critical of Dave Canales. He has to develop the talent that he is given. He also is responsible for his staff and personnel decision is on game days. I'm glad that he saw fit to get JT more involved yesterday. He gets zero credit for Hunter Renfrow, as should've never fired him in the first place, only to rehire him due to injury.  But Dan, I'd give another couple of years.
    • Pass rushers are spot that outside of the drafts elite typically take 2-3 to develope and bro is tripping in 2 games... this team SUCKS no need to be so dramatic
    • Learn to laugh more. The inevitable is on its way and if that was a high point for those people the there is lots more laughter ahead.
