Players that helped/hurt themselves (Game 2)

HELPED

Damiere Byrd - 3 catches for 36 yards and should have had a TD but DA missed him.

Marcus Lucas - big target that had 3 grabs for 39 yards.

Jeremy Cash - solid on special teams and contributed 5 tackles on D with one for loss.

HURT

Daryl Worley - Had 5 tackles but was picked on often. He will learn and get better.

Scott Simonson - Got the start but could not get open and did next to nothing.

Helped:

Bene Benwikere

Damiere Byrd

Kevin Norwood

David Mayo

James Bradberry

Eric Crume

2nd string Oline - Hawkins?  I wasn't watching them too closely, but they seemed better this week.  Need to go back and watch more closely to see who did well...

Fozzy - nice shiftiness

Delaire on pass rush

Robert Lester

Hurt:

Sandland (especially thinking of the one play when he was pushed back into our backfield)

Simonson?  He's still clearly #3 on depth chart, nothing really changed, but was hoping to see him flash.

Garrett?  Was he even ever on the field?

Delaire re: Run blocking

Hard for me to really say too much about CAP / Wegher.  I wonder if we're deliberately not playing Wegher with the 1s so as to be able to safely stash him on the PS.  CAP had a couple of nice runs.  I'm not too worried about him.

That's right, forgot about Garrett. Apparently so did our coaching staff

I think like the OP, you have to put Lucas in the conversation of helping himself. The other TEs did next to nothing.

Garrett was a forgotten man. If they can send Brandon Boykins packing last year, then Garrett can definitely be sent on his way this year. For that matter, Todman last year was arguably better than a few of the backs so far this year, so that's something to think about.

Sometimes circumstances hurt you more than you hurt yourself.

I've seen this name a couple of times but, who the fug is Eric Crume? Ive never seen him mentioned in tc practice tweets and never seen him make a play on the field.

Yeah he's an interesting guy. It's going to come down to 330lbs Crume , Robert Thomas and Kyle Love for the 5th DT spot.

And that's IF we choose to have 5DT's on our roster.

He's a DT we signed to a futures contract in Jan.

He's nearly never been mentioned in practice write ups, but he's made some very nice plays last week and this week in terms of pressure.

TEs - Besides Lucas, where were the young guys? Simonson was bad, but Sandland and Deaver don't seem to have gotten any targets at all. Why?

Sandland was blocking a lot of plays.  We seemed to be using him in a FB-esque role today.

Yup, we have ridiculous depth at DT, LB and WR.  Who we keep as a 5th DT (IF we do, as you said) is going to be a very hard choice.

I'm guessing you meant McClain?

Oops!!  I don't even have the excuse of being in Africa and writing that at 3 or 4 in the morning with the time zone difference.  I'm here in CLT until the end of the month.

I think I was thinking of DT Robert Thomas, but yes, McClain has been solid as well

    • Yep - honestly though, I thought his coverage was as good as you could possibly do on a man coverage crossing route with Dak having all day to throw. Dak made a perfect throw and if it wasn't in front of Pickens, it could have easily been picked off. Seemed like we ran more man than I have seen our defense run so far this year. Defense also did a great job of playing their gap/zone responsibilities (even if Dak did pick apart our zone a good chunk of the game) - that screen play on the last drive could easily have gone for a touchdown if Moehrig didn't play his zone and make a great tackle. Biggest complaint about Evero was not blitzing a few more times (especially when Dallas was in the red zone). The few times we did it, Dak didn't look comfortable.
    • There was some pretty egregious missed calls vs the Chiefs in the Lions game, especially Kelce. The completion where he clearly used the ground to catch the ball. The hold in front of the ref as Pacheco ran by where the defender was trying to turn around and couldnt because Kelce had him by the jersey. Mahomes openly taunting after scoring a TD. 0 penalties after double digit the week before. Cmon.
    • People get trade happy and look at resources as barter items. They fail to see them as resources to be used to our benefit rather than someone else's. Right now, Chuba and Rico are massive benefits to us and a strong rushing attack so greatly benefits any passer, much less a young one like Bryce still is.  And the better our running game, the more our offense can eat up the clock, the less time our defense is on the field. And that is priceless, too. Don't mess with the running game. Don't mess with the receivers. Maybe look at our O-line and think we may have hit on something good during these injuries. Look at our D-line and seem some strength evolving there. Our secondary has its good spots and some that are still developing. Our linebacking corps did well this last outing. Our special teams are on a major upswing as of this past week. Heck, even our QB is showing us a little something right now that we can build on. Perhaps putting out a yard sale sign right now might be less advantageous than looking at the team and saying, "You are all part of something good that is happening. We want to see that continue to grow."
