Panthers Historical Win % versus each 2016 opponent

I should have thought to post this sooner, perhaps in the game-by-game prediction thread.   But since that's now moved to page 2, I thought it would be worth posting this as a stand-alone topic.

There's a reason the Denver game has a lot of us nervous wrecks this week....  not only does it dredge up all the awful memories of Super Bowl 50 that most of us want to forget, but Denver is our toughest opponent this season in terms of the Panthers historical record against them.  We're only 1 - 4 in the past 21 seasons.

Note: these totals include regular season AND post season games.

We REALLY need this win to get the Denver monkey off our backs, and to start the season with strong positive momentum.   It could be equivalent to our win vs. Seattle last year in terms of setting the tone for the season and making a statement that we aim to win it all.

Let's go Panthers.  KEEP POUNDING.  Let's trounce those ponies BIG TIME.

Looking for the run game to set the standard for the season. Can you do stats for Panthers win when they run the ball effectively?

That is really astonishing. On the overall chart, the Colts are the team we have beat up most regularly at 83.3% winning percentage. The Steelers and, believe it or not, the Bills are tied for whooping us most regularly, as we win only 16.7% of the games played against them.

Great work KB!

I spent some time looking at our past 5 years of opening games, in which we're 2-3  (Losses: 2011 - 2012 - 2013, Wins 2014, 2015)

The Run game is a big factor in the wins.  It's not so much the yards / attempt, but the number / % of running plays.  Running 30+ run plays (approx 50% of offensive plays) seems to be a key to our success.

Our week 1 games tend to be low scoring affairs on both sides of the field.  Clock control is important....  A few 10 play drives / 5 minute drives were big parts of our wins in 2014 & 2015.

I'll write more on this in the morning, probably as a separate thread or a main page article...
