Mike Remmers is a borderline JAG

Looking casually at this play it may seem easy to place blame on Mike Remmers. Afterall, it was his man, linebacker Todd Davis (51) who ends up sacking Cam. So, definitely Remmers fault right? Well, maybe not.

Notice how much push Von Miller (58) has on Ed Dickson (84) on the outside and begins to turn into Cam Newton. It is at this moment Mike Remmers engages Miller, leaving his own man in the process. This is in essence a “no win situation” for Remmers. Stick with his man and watch as Von Miller sacks Cam Newton, or engage Von Miller and let Cam Newton have a chance against the much smaller linebacker.

If you look at the above GIF IMO Igo's assessment is wrong, If Remmers would have stuck to his block this play could have far better outcome. Miller is still couple of strides away as Newton began to scramble forward, but instead of having the OT sustaining the block  the open gap gets closed in by # 51 &  prevents Newton from scrambling to his right hash mark  away from # 97 incoming defenders and weaving behind Turner for a positive outcome.  Blocking should have been done like # 70.

I don't think Darryl Williams is the savior either. I think the coaches really wanted him to at least provide Remmers with a stiff challenge in camp if not straight up take his job. Rivera even specifically mentioned that he was disappointed Williams didn't push Remmers more.

At the end of the day, you have to realize you're probably not getting a starting OT in the 4th round. If Williams becomes a quality backup, that's still a decent pick.

Our problem is that we have a second year 4th rounder and a former UDFA competing at RT. I don't blame either guy. They are who they are and I've seen no indication that they aren't doing everything the staff is asking of them. They just aren't good enough and you can't put that on the player if they're putting in the work.

Remmers is serviceable but with that being said we still dont have nothing to lose by playing Williams logically.

They would provide about the same far as pass protection on the right side.

Williams is a better run blocker which is what we need desperately. The run game is overrated on here a lot, having him a Trai maul people on the right side would help us greatly considering we are a run first team or trying to be.

In the salary cap era, especially after picking at the end of every round for multiple years running, JAG's are inevitable-just a matter of which position you prefer your JAG's.  Biggest head scratcher to me is what to do with the cap space we have currently.

Assuming the Panthers, Browns, and 49ers schedules play out as somewhat expected over the next 6-8 weeks, maybe a move for Joe Thomas or Joe Staley before the deadline could return to the forefront of consideration.

Could be. The point was there really was not a good choice for Remmers. I tend to lay more blame on Dickson here. Make no doubt, if not for Remmers that was a much rougher sack on Cam by Miller.

First you gotta give him a chance to prove it, but his greatest value is in the run game and he would have far more impact than Remmers. This would lead to a fresher front 7 to stop opposing running game and allowing the LBs to drop back in coverage and help the young CBs.

Also we need to do more inside and outside zone runs.

I disagree Remmers may  had a mental lapse but the right choice was to block his man. Cam was already scrambling forward and would have escaped Millers pursuit at least back there maybe Miller would have caught him from behind but it would have been for positive play Newton.

If we are willing to start rookie CBs then we should take the risk to start 2nd year OT who fits your scheme and could develop into a quality OT.

Dickson actually did a decent job on that play. He was keeping Miller outside leaving Cam space to step up into. Space that was then filled by the player Remmers decided to let run free at the QB. At best Miller has to dive to make a shoe string tackle if Remmers stays on his man.

    • Yeah okay. We as an organization have been more patient with him than many. And there has been a small parade of guys drafted since he was, also to bad teams, that have passed him. Some have lapped him. As a fan I am out of patience but he gets this year it is out of my hands always has been. I just hope the bar is higher than it has been for him.    FWIW, XL dropped two passes last year. He did do some other bad stuff, just saying.
    • Except it takes those QB's a few years to develop because they needed to learn the mental side of the game and have it catch up to their physical attributes. Bryce was supposed to be a QB savant who already had a fully developed mental side of the game and that was going to make up for his lack of physical ability.  And his lack of NFL level QB physical traits has been clear as day to anyone who has watched him the last 3 years, mainly, he just doesn't have an NFL arm, he can't zip the ball into tight spaces or throw on a line down the field like is needed at this level.
    • Don’t recall seeing many of his interviews but what strikes me is that he engages and goes in depth. Even with the cliche answers as referenced by OP come across somewhat thoughtful.  Very likable personality despite being someone who can crush an average person like I can crush a paper cup. I knew Motons mother had a career at MSU but was looking on the google and found that Mushin Muhammad personally knew Motons grandfather.   His late grandfather was a professor at MSU.   Cool guy.  Interesting family and small world.
