Doug Martin is expected to miss three weeks. Relevant to the Panthers? Yes, we play them in three weeks.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back Doug Martin is expected to miss about three weeks with a hamstring injury, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported following the results of his MRI.

The pinball runner exited Sunday's blowout loss to the Arizona Cardinals in the first half after suffering the injury.

Tampa has a bye in Week 6, meaning Martin would get extra rest for his hamstring before visiting San Francisco.

In the short term, it's a massive blow to the Bucs' offense. After Martin left the contest Sunday, Tampa's run game struggled, especially on runs between the tackles. Last season, the compact, muscle-bound 5-foot-9 back plowed his way for 1,402 yards on 288 carries. In less than six quarters this season, Martin again displayed a knack for slithering through small gaps to pick up extra yardage and bowled over linebackers and defensive backs on the second level.

Charles Sims takes over as the lead back in Martin's absence. While Sims ran noticeably tougher in two games this season, he's not a between-the-tackles mudder. A pass-catching maven, Sims' game is better in space against linebackers and safeties than taking on 315-pound defensive tackles.

Recently signed Jacquizz Rodgers took the backup role Sunday after Martin exited, but is also a scatback lacking power. Undrafted rookie Peyton Barber, from Auburn, rounds out the Bucs' backfield.

In the next three weeks, the Bucs face the Los Angeles Rams, Denver Broncos and Carolina Panthers. Those are three of the top defensive front sevens in the NFL. It will be tough sledding for Sims and Rodgers in the run game.

With Martin out, Tampa loses the power element to its game. More pressure will fall to Jameis Winston without Martin's chain-moving ability. The Bucs could find themselves in more second- and third-and-long situations the next three weeks.

We expected Winston to make a leap in Year 2. That leap just became more difficult, and more vital without Martin for almost a month.

So no AP this week, and no Doug Martin in 3 weeks. I hate injuries, but I'm not sad that it benefits us.

That being said, it's going to cause the Vikes and Bucs to throw more. Our rookie secondary has performed well so far, and I'm not that overly scared of Bradford and Ryan. But Winston does bother me a bit, especially with his receivers performing better this season. Then again... they couldn't do a lot against the Cardinals defense. So idk.... gonna be an interesting few weeks

I have him too but hes benched, I have Riddick (DET) against GB instead. Am I nuts or not?

I'm starting Riddick at RB2 and Sims in the flex. Injuries are a bitch. I had Danny Woodhead and Keenan Allen. I'd start Riddick over Sims for now but if you're PPR they are both good options.

    • Yeah and I am doubtful he can offer that consistently. I don’t have many years left at my age and in my view we have wasted two and this whole exercise with him was always a three year minimum.  I am out on that with a guy I don’t believe in, and never believed in, it has sucked. To me it is a costly detour off the right track. Years.    But I am not so rigid that I can’t see excellence. He needs to display it though, consistently before I change my outlook.
    • No, when I said rage, I meant rage, which only applies to certain fans on this board. Your timeline of trying to assess whether he is the future or not is really tied to the discussions surrounding his second contract. If this team is going to commit to some monster contract while he has shown nothing but glimpses of brilliance would be deservedly worrisome, so the clock is genuinely ticking for him to settle into something resembling his final form. Perhaps a best case scenario is that he plays well, the team succeeds, but he does so with a more limited role that makes the rest of the league view him as a game manager, and his second contract value reflects that. Then he continues to improve and becomes a bargain comparatively while not handicapping the team around him, and we enter an era of consistent championship competitiveness that the fanbase has craved for decades and has never really experienced before. But that requires many, many things to go right and for Bryce himself to facilitate that if he ends up being the quarterback of the future.
    • Exactly. And the flame throwers as well, get location benefits from not going all out. But they have it in reserve.  Not sure how much Greg had but he was an artist.  There was a YouTube I came across last year or maybe even 2023 and I don’t how to even find now but it had two NFL QBs I want say one was Carr from the Raiders but I don’t really remember  The point of it is they stood side by side throwing identical distances to identical targets. Radar gun was used.  They threw the normal effort (not all out) and it was measured etc. Then they were asked to throw their ‘fastball’. They were missing and most often they were missing high. It demonstrated the same principle.    edit: and applying that to arm strength, give me the guy that doesn’t need max effort to have good velocity. The margins are so narrow with less velocity in tne NFL the defenders can Close on it and this is a league where they value down to the 100th of a second level. It is that tight
