Mike Pettine vs Ron Meeks

Maybe besides the verbage, the scheme is not much different. It looks the same on TV anyway, I haven't noticed much change. It's just old compared to what many teams are doing. No variation, the players are not buying into it. What defense would not say "fly to the ball" or gang tackle or try to incorporate speed? Most of the successful defenses are complex, so why are we trying to simplify it? Do we have low football IQ players on the team?

Simple

The Jets run a 3-4 defense

So do the

Pats

Steelers

Ravens

Packers

I think the Eagles use a version as do the Dolphines

It's a more aggresive defense and better suited for todays N F L with Blitz coming from differnt areas at differnt times

Panthers are still stuck in the prevent, bend don't break defenses of old

:confused:Not sure what I'm trying again

Just saying the 3-4 is a more aggresive defense

Someone said Jets brought 3 Ravens players

Ravens run a 3-4

Steelers have ran a 3-4 for years

Packers have just switched with Capers

As far as Pts allowed after 2 games

You are correct

As far as defenses other teams hate to play

Steelers

Eagles

Ravens

Pat's

have been there for several seasons

You fighting last year's battle.

Ravens and Pats D's are old and won't do much this year most likely. NE's actually running a lot of 4-3 too btw.

Eagles are 4-3.

Steelers have been running a plug and play 3-4 forever that they constantly can overhaul their personnel.

Scheme is overrated.

I think just new life has been injected into that D. Ryan came in known as a defensive guy and all the players wanted to show him they belonged in his D.

I didn't really expect our defense to come out guns blazing. Didn't we have a short camp anyway? The D will improve as the season goes along, I just hope it's won't be too late.

Think about how much the team was talking about 'peaking' at the right time and being hot going into the playoffs. Perhaps that mindset took hold too much.

I think the Carolina coaches are too nice. I think our players are too nice and soft......I think the playcalling is safe and passive overall. The attiutide and mindset is clearly displayed. I hate to say it but we need a few nasty guys to help give this team an edge.

Trgovac's defense was geared more towards the play called. Beason calls it out, the players know what part of the field they need to cover and what they need to do.

Meeks' defense is geared toward starting in your zone, then reacting to the play itself, and "swarming" to the ball. You don't sit in one spot and make sure it's covered, you have to diagnose what's going on and what's going to happen and adjust on the fly to events as they unfold.

To make it simple, in Trgovac's defense you had a good idea where you would end up before the ball was snapped. In Meeks' you don't know until the play is in motion.

As far as the Jets defense, Mangini ran the base 3-4 just like Ryan does. He has a system like Trgovac's in that the defenders know what they're doing and where they're going before the ball is snapped. Put that together with the influx of talent and a healthy Kris Jenkins and it's no wonder that they're looking great now. BTW, last year before Jenkins' body gave out their defense was looking pretty good too.

    • I see both sides of the arguments, but compared to last year we're somehow at an upgrade over completely fried Dalton and wasn't even good in college Plummer. At least Pickett and Grier probably have some desire to make more money when Dalton was happy to just go through the motions and I will never understand why they even bothered with Plummer.
    • After watching Dan for 3 yrs now, I think I understand his plan. It’s a simple plan that should work for the long run.     I saw some of this last yr. Dan wants a vet and a young player at each position. I really think we go OT if one they like there. Moton is aging, Icky will not be back until 27, if ever. We need to get ahead of the tackle problem
    • You are just stressing too much about these particular positions. You want to upgrade from Bryce and I understand that but you aren’t going to really get that without getting into a bidding war for a QB2 potential QB1 like Willis. You could possibly trade for Mills or the backup for Chicago but they are still gambles and their teams will won’t decent picks.  Again the Eagles thought KP was a capable enough backup to trade for him once their backup was hurt and won a Super Bowl with him as QB2. The point is most teams aren’t rolling with some stud QB2/3 that is going to push even a bottom tier starter. They are better off the building their roster in other areas. The Rams are rolling with Bennett right now as QB2 for example.  The goal is winning absolutely. We overachieved last year even with stumbling into the playoffs. Another year and this staff needs to take the next step in building a team. Will Grier has little to no impact on that….
