Jake Delhomme Comments on Panthers

Delhomme knew the 2004 team was going nowhere at 1-7 because injuries and changes to the offensive line decimated the core of the Super Bowl team. He believes the current team, led by NFL MVP Cam Newton, still has the talent to make the playoffs.

“At 1-7, the playoffs were never thought of,” Delhomme said. “We were just trying to save jobs. You’re working as hard as you can to get some things to happen, but it just wasn’t happening.

“I truly believe this team can bounce back.”

The final drive of the season opener was a prime example. Intentional grounding against Newton with 36 seconds left negated a 15-yard roughing-the-passer penalty that would have had given Carolina the ball at the Denver 38.

Newton completed a 16-yard pass to Kelvin Benjamin on the next play that would have made Graham Gano’s final field-goal attempt a chip shot from the 22.

Instead, Gano wound up trying a 50-yarder that was wide left in a 21-20 loss.

“I truly believe if they make a field goal in Denver, the season looks totally, totally different,” Delhomme said. “To go to Denver, play the defending champs, opening night -- which is kind of unheard of -- you’re not supposed to win that game. The NFL does not want you to win that game. That’s why they sent you there.

“But if that field goal is made with all the shots [Newton] took that night, I think you’re looking at a different record and different swagger than this team has right now.”

I just said this in my last thread. 1 job to do and the confidence withered away because he didn't do it. Workout some kickers, Panthers should be looking for a replacement

Gano chokes, no way in hell he makes a 22 yard game winning FG.

For some god unknown reason everyone, even fans love Gano. We splurge on a punter, but I'll take a prime FG kicker vs. an elite punter any day. I miss Kasay so much, the days where you celebrated a win, felt good inside before he even kicked a game winning FG, the days where a touchdown meant 7 points.

I love Jake.

He'll always be a top 5 favorite for me. He wasn't nearly as talented as Newton but he had heart and passion. The Delhomme - Smitty connection was real.

That 2005 year man. Injuries killed our chance to win a SB that year or atleast be in it. Its not easy to get to the SB yet alone win it. If you have a window, don't close it or start lowering it shut

Kris Jenkins and moose on that team would have been amazing. Whale and Lucas on that team we're amazing pickups that year.

I've said for years, and it teally surprises me how many Panther fans disagree with me, but Jake was the perfect QB for the Panthers at the time.

Jake wasn't the greatest athlete to ever play QB, but you'd be hard pressed to find a guy who could lead players to achieve more than they thought they could. That guy was a never give up guy and that strength of his won us a bunch of games we had no business winning.

I kinda wish he could go in there and inspire the team before a game or two. Seems like we could use it. If I were JR, I'd put him on the payroll and just stash him away for a half time speech here and there when we needed it.

Some people hold grudges because of the Cardinals playoff game.

That wasn't all on Jake. We had a killer rushing attack which we used to drive the ball down the field on our first drive. We abandoned the run after that which really made no sense. I blame coaching. That could've been our year.

    • Honestly, it wasn't on him last game. There are many other reasons that come before Bryce. Dave Canales is really starting to worry me. I mean there are glaring issues that can't be excused. I said back when the whole Rico/Chubba thing happened. I said right then that you cannot have a coach that handled those 4 or 5 games the way he did. I get it, most thought that he was trying to throw games, which was not wrong thinking because of how bad it was. The decisions right before half. The strict "Chubba gets this drive and Rico gets the next." It's seeming like a lot of our backups are the better talent, so he cant evaluate talent. Not calling a quarterback sneak because of size. Small quarterback have a different type of advantage, just not as good as a large quarterback, but still doable. Then he doesn't even explain why he didn't put Dalton in there (saying it would give away a quarterback sneak is...just stop). I honestly think he forgot about putting in Dalton. There are so many others that I'd have to re-watch the games to remember.  I could make a whole other post on that defensive game plan...absolutely awful. And a quick petition...see the quote above, can we please ban these weirdos and try to clean this place up. This is peak reddit right here and these losers will destroy the board. I couldn't make it though 3 pages because these morons post more than anyone else. These are the perpetual online freaking weirdos banned from getting too close to schools reddit mod types. Get these losers out of here. You got these freaks posting a ton and not answering the question OP posted ABOUT THE PANTHERS. This is supposed to be about football and this dork constantly tries to attack OP's question. Could you imagine someone in your real life group acting like this? You'd kick his butt out immediately. And you have this reddit loser trying to stop people for posting about the Panthers. Any normal person would just skip the post, but you have to remember these morons base their whole personality on their online persona. They would be banned almost everywhere else. Send him back to reddit, they will be a cancer to this place, trust me. I guarantee you he has more comments than 95% of accounts. These guys are the lowest in society so they live online. Its everything to them. You dont want that. Just read his responses. Do background check on that guy, there are younger people on this too and he probably isn't allowed to be talking to them, or be on here at all.
    • Neither of them are getting in. Cam had HOF potential but was squandered by Ron, Shula, and Gettlemen.
    • We have attempted several over the past two seasons. Maybe two successful?
