Some troublesome stats

I honestly think it's a culmination of reasons.  I'll start a list of what comes off my head:

Mental.  I honestly think some of it is getting mental.  You could tell in the fourth quarter thursday the team had no chance of doing anything on offense or defense.  Just their persona.  They knew it was going to happen.

Too conservative.  I think we all know this can be an issue with this coaching staff.  Especially on defense.  When we get big leads we just give teams huge cushions.  I'll admit I'm not great with X's and O's when it comes to talking football, but it's clear we tone down the pressure and have our secondary players back off with big leads.  They go away from what works.  This allows teams to just effortlessly rip off 12-15 yard plays.

Lack of execution on offense.  From Shula down.  We're all quick to blame Shula and I do it too, but our offensive players simply don't execute when playing with a lead.  I actually thought Shula remained pretty aggressive in the second half Thursday, he let Cam try some passes on early downs even with a big lead.  He also called a phenomenal tight end screen to Greg Olsen that went for a big first down on a third down conversion.  But we had some just terrible dropped passes Thursday, a lot that killed drives.  Dickson, Brown, Benjamin, Funchess I know all had awful drops that would have been nice gains.

Our depth sucks.  I think this is some of it.  We got gassed up front especially on the DL Thursday and the Saints feasted, we lack depth everywhere right now

Not sure how I feel about that mental part. The Defense played pretty well down the stretch. But that Offense did look a little discombobulated. It was either the WR were a little off, what with all the drops. Or Cam was only 14-33, so he wasn't up to his normal standard. I could see it with the Offense, not so much with the Defense.

IMO, both the Offense and Defense pretty much stayed aggressive. Cam was throwing on first downs, and we did throw 3 straight pass on one of our 3 and outs. And the Defense was doing things all through the game. Zone Blitzes, Stunts, CB and S blitzed, and the regular A gap blitz. So they did try to stay somewhat aggressive. For the most part, the D did well. And the O struggled.

I am not going to dog on that patchwork Oline. So my only real problem with execution was the drops.

And lastly depth. Other than CB, we have it. We used our 3rd string C, we used our 2nd string LB, we rotate in the DB positions, and we have a lot of WR depth. Now...it is quality depth, but it is upgradable.

All in all, I agree somewhat.

Every single time. Every single time we get a lead going into the second half, we go into low-risk offense and defense. Maybe that wins you some games, but it's apparent that it loses you a lot too.

Remember when Rivera said he threw away "The Book"?

He lied.

    • I am high, but that’s besides the point! The blue line is not good right now. I’ve said it all year. I don’t think this group meshes well. Slaven has been just OK Niki up and down Miller up and down ghost and Walker have been your most consistent guys. Maybe it comes together more towards the playoffs
    • I was expecting to see more cap room moves by now, which may be to suggest that we are not going to be that aggressive.  I have mixed emotions about that (because I think we have 3 needs on D and 3 needs on O--starters).  If you look to the draft for 3 starters, that is ambitious.  We need 6
    • Yeah we shouldn’t be competing with teams, bidding wise, to sign a WR. There will be one for us and our budget.  I keep saying, how many balls will there be to go around anyway? One thing good I will say for this offense is the ball has been spread around at times. Seems like I remember seeing a large number of guys have caught passes in a game. Or been targeted at least. 3 RBs 4 or 5 WRs 2-3 TEs type of stat lines. 10-11 guys.  Not every week but that happens.    As far as WR in general, we need the smaller agile and quicker component to compliment what is there. After that it should be about depth, having good backups for the starters so we can run things consistently still, if a guy is out for a week or two. That is especially important in game where you have to finish the game with who you made active.
